As has been mentioned already, SOX found little use on railways, as its monochromatic light was too similar to an amber signal and could cause confusion to a train driver. As well as being precluded from any BR installations, the monopoly that SOX had over municipal street lighting up to the 1980s caused problems, especially where lanterns were sited close to a bridge. The answer was to use a cut-off lantern. On the M60 near Denton, the motorway passes under the Guidebridge to Stockport freight route. Here on either side of the railway bridge is a pair of GEC Z9563s. The remaining stretch is still lit with MA60s.  

In Manchester, where the typical lanterns were all SCO types by Eleco, Revo or Phosware, the answer came in the form of retro-fit baffle plates or cowls. They seemed to be of a standard design (possibly supplied by the manufacturers themselves) and provided quite a generous cutoff, although some looked as if they were made in house.

With the demise of SOX in Manchester's PFI programme, the use of baffles was thought to have been discontinued. However it is now evident that the use of of retro-fit baffles has once again become necessary, due to complaints from the public about localised light pollution from the new installations!

Farnborough railway station on the SWML out of Waterloo is one of several that has had its car park extended by the building of a steel framed double story extension. The new structure is lit (with what looks like from a speeding train) Axia LED lanterns.

The use of LED lanterns for railway platform lighting is still in the minority - will we see more LED lighting perhaps with motion sensors being used to replace the predominately SON/MH in use at present and cut energy consumption?

There is a trial of Urbis Axias with PIR dimming at Southampton Airport Parkway on a small section of the coastbound platform. In addition to this, a couple of LED lanterns have appeared in a car park at Southampton Central.

Trowbridge station has had its car park improved and new LED lighting installed. The lanterns are black and a look like a shorter and bulky version of the Urbis/Schreder Teceo.

They may be the new shape version of the OrangeTek TerraLED, however their website and images online only show the original version of the TerraLED. Mazeteam had some images of the new version fitted to concrete columns, but these are no longer showing on the forum.

Interestingly each lantern has its own PIR sensor which looks very much like a standard domestic sensor.

This afternoon at Warminster, the existing red shaft, grey base Abacus fold down columns were getting a new coat of grey on their bases.

Who manufactured those lanterns are used at Three Bridges (and I believe at Barnham and Chichester too), as I can't tell if they're LED or CFL? I believe that Southern are begining to introduce them to replace the former NSE GEC "BR" lantern and the ZXU1s?


Closer to home in Yorkshire sees three new railway stations that are set to open up later this year, these being Kirkstall Forge (station code KLF), Apperley Bridge (station code APY) and Low Moor (station code to be confirmed). No idea what the lanterns are to be used, probably LED, but going by the last two stations that were opened in 2000 (Brighouse) and 2005 (Glasshougton), Brighouse uses Phillips SGS201's and Glasshoughton uses ZX3s.

The lanterns used on Southern station platforms are Dexeco Impervia LED Column lanterns. Two variants are used, one variant with Philips Fortimo and another with individual LED lenses.

The approach to the car park at Evesham railway station in Worcs, still has a pair of CU Midway X columns complete with Thorn Beta 4s.

Meanwhile, more up to date, the new platforms at Reading have conventional Abacus fold down columns fitted with short outreach brackets and Cosmo ZXU1s located on the platforms after the ends of the new canopy. However some of the columns have had what looks like fluorescent (although they could be LED) emergency lighting bulkheads (of the type usually used to mark exits with the running man symbol) fitted to the bracket arms between the lantern and the column and facing down to illuminate the platform.

That is quite bizarre. Those EM bulkheads, even if they have LEDs fitted, still only give out a limited amount of light designed to light up a corridor or the space outside directly around a fire exit - at 6m up in the air their effectiveness will be questionable. They should have fitted IP65 rated twinspots.

On the former Woodhead route, there's at least one at Hadfield where the platform used to continue in the direction towards the tunnel

I'll dig out the photos. The originals had been on a Facebook page, so it seems odd they're not showing as the page is still running. If I can't find the photos, I do have very easy access to TerraLED lanterns so can take new photos.
