Not so much station lighting, but I saw a bizarre occurrence at Eastleigh railway yard the other night.

There are some 1980s Phosco SON floodlights illuminating some of the sidings at Eastleigh, which are group switched. The floodlights were flickering quite severely, perhaps at a rate of 3-5 times per second. The flicker was affecting all the floodlights, and they all flickered in sync with each other. My best guess was that there was a power supply voltage fluctuation. It's not something I have seen before, and the floodlights are working fine now, so it seemed to be a one off.

The LED retrofit continues. Portchester station in Hampshire has had its SON ZX1s (dating from the mid-1980s) replaced with Axias, but on the same columns.

I remember when the ZX1s on Abacus fold down columns replaced the previous concrete columns which had either AEI Starcones/Beta 1s/Eleco "railway" lanterns (can't remember exactly which) running GLS.  :?

On the Reading/Basingstoke line (although GWR look after these stations), DW Windsor Kirium LED lanterns with PIR sensors have replaced some of the SON lighting on the platforms - end of platform columns and every other, along the centre of the platform, for example. The under canopy fluorescent lighting is also dimmed when no one is on the platform.

The recent re-signalling at Bristol Temple Meads, has also seen work carried out to the station lighting.

The main train shed was lit with Hi Bay installations with spun aluminium reflectors. Originally SON, they have been of late, been running white light. These have been replaced with LED downlight fittings with almost a 1960s styling.

The light source is a circular ring of LEDs on the underside, but light also diffuses through the canopy. There are more of these new fittings than the old ones.

The platforms canopies, previously lit with fluorescent tubes are now lit with linear LED fittings.

Meanwhile at Filton Abbey Wood, the SON Civics have been replaced with LED fittings fitted with motion sensors.

GWR stations elsewhere, are being retrofitted with LED lanterns with motion sensors at the ends of the platforms, with the existing "all night" lighting only remaining near the station buildings and platform shelters.

Doncaster railway station still appears to have Eleco HW918s on its footbridge.

Poor quality zoomed in image taken from a train on the other side of the station.

Google maps also shows them but with floodlights also present, so its doubtful the Elecos still work.

The late Sir William McAlpine who brought the Flying Scotsman steam locomotive back from the USA in the 1970s and financed its overhaul, has been honoured by having a Class 90 locomotive named after him.

Of interest in the article, is this image showing a Thorn Beta 9 on a 7 bracket column outside York station to the right of the locomotive.

Observed at the wknd, the lanterns have been relamped with LED "corn" bulbs.
