The best thing to do is have a sample of how each type is wired (ie SON, MBF...) and then work on wiring one from the example. The first lanterns I obtained from derelict areas, I cut the cable to the lantern just above the part where the seperate wires joined together in the cable sheath - that way then at home you can just see where every wire goes.

At least you haven't had to wire in a double 400w SON set from scratch, using Thorn gear with anti-cycling ignitors that have the extra yellow wire. That took a while to do, and then I had to feed the cable into my GEC Flying Saucer!

Whilst we're on the subject of ballast wiring, has anyone got one of these:

I just want to know where the capacitor goes. At the moment lamp is 1&6, Cap is 2&5 and Line in is 3(L)&5(N). Currently gets 0.84PF.

0.84 is ok, anything better than 0.8 is consider ok, you will never get 1.0, 0.9 is the usual maximum. The capacitor may be a bit low on value, for 140W/90W SOX it should have a value of 20-25uF.

Does it work without the capacitor connected? The ballast doesn't specifically give capacitor wiring details, so if it does work without the capacitor connected, then try it on the L-N terminals and see what you get PF wise.

Thanks. Thought as much but best be safe.

It went to 0.90-0.93 when connected across the mains so I have left it like this.

No. PFC capacitor goes across the mains supply, one connection to L, other to N. The capacitor is never connected to lamp terminal, unless you are using a common N connection point for the lamp and capacitor.

For ES lamp holders, the ring thread of the lampholder must be connected to N, the pip terminal goes to the ballast.

Right, I'll edit post in a bit to reflect that.

How come ES lamp holders have to be wired that way specifically?
EDIT never mind, I googled it, I know now. This is how mine is wired.

I assume the rest of what I said was ok, I'd rather not mislead anyone.

Hi All,

While going through my ballasts I spotted a Davis Thyractor. I couldn't remember if it worked or not so I fired it up, I have tried it with both 35 and 55W tubes and it works well. Does this have some electronics built inside or is it just a transformer? As can be seen from the pics it is a nicely designed piece of kit.

Would anyone know roughly what year this was on the go?

No electronics, just a "modern" leak transformer. The same basic design was rebadged by various different manufacturers - I have several of the same basic type but with different labels. Often used as a replacement part for older ballasts.

Date wise yours looks 1980s, but the basic type/outline was available still into the 2000s.
