York has 6 pairs of gas lanterns (2 at West entrance of the Minster by Duncombe Place, 2 on seperate columns by South entrance of the Minster, and 2 at St Helens Square)... and they tend to vay in terms of operation. the ones by the west entrance of the minster seem to fare well, but the others occaisionally get vandalised or the gas mantles fall off. I have been tipped off that the council are evaluating whether to keep the gas lanterns at St Helens Square or not... at the moment they are still there, but the supply has been turned off (the columns are on brick pedestals, and inside the brick pedestals is the control valve and a gas meter for each lantern).
Obviously if they are removed, it won't be Amey doing the work

Just found a clearer view of the Leeds ones... so clear you can even see the SUGG logo on the glass
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&sourc ... 34332&z=16The box below the lantern will likely contain a timeswitch... But I cannot decide if this is a Pilot Light switched lantern, or if the timeswitch has an electrical ignitor fitted so a pilot light isn't needed. You can see the main gas pipe go up into the lantern, but next to it is a smaller line which looks more flexible - and this goes into a small box just inside the lantern which is sitting on the main gas pipe - but then a small line comes out of the box and goes up to the mantles at the top.
