The Park estate in Nottingham is still lit by gas as well, not sure what the switching method is but I'm sure somebody here will!  ;)

Mechanical time switches with pilot lights.  :D
The Park Estate's lanterns are mainly of the 'windsor' design, but I did spot one that was similar to a yoke-mounted 'rochester' design.

Sadly this is the wrong time of year for me to be thinking about Nottinghams gas lighting, because I can't see it in use until the nights start drawing in again in the autumn! The latest train I can get back from there, to be home at a sensible time, is about 19.15 - and even now it's still daylight at that time.

A street in Leeds City Centre is still lit by gas. Well, it would be if they worked. Sadly only one works very dimly and the houses are floodlit from the path.

Do you know which road this is? I must take a look next time I'm in Leeds!

Maybe that's because Leeds has a PFI contractor looking after the lighting. Gas lighting will obviously require specially-made parts etc that they probably won't have in stock. Perhaps they are waiting on an order for some replacement parts for the gas lanterns in question. (Bit more of a long shot, but perhaps like many contractors they're too clueless to know what to do with them!   ). I guess you could always e-mail them and ask them about the lanterns and why they're in such a poor state of repair.

York has 6 pairs of gas lanterns (2 at West entrance of the Minster by Duncombe Place, 2 on seperate columns by South entrance of the Minster, and 2 at St Helens Square)... and they tend to vay in terms of operation. the ones by the west entrance of the minster seem to fare well, but the others occaisionally get vandalised or the gas mantles fall off. I have been tipped off that the council are evaluating whether to keep the gas lanterns at St Helens Square or not... at the moment they are still there, but the supply has been turned off (the columns are on brick pedestals, and inside the brick pedestals is the control valve and a gas meter for each lantern).

Obviously if they are removed, it won't be Amey doing the work

Just found  a clearer view of the Leeds ones... so clear you can even see the SUGG logo on the glass

The box below the lantern will likely contain a timeswitch... But I cannot decide if this is a Pilot Light switched lantern, or if the timeswitch has an electrical ignitor fitted so a pilot light isn't needed. You can see the main gas pipe go up into the lantern, but next to it is a smaller line which looks more flexible - and this goes into a small box just inside the lantern which is sitting on the main gas pipe - but then a small line comes out of the box and goes up to the mantles at the top.

The ones in Horsham have been switched off, well the remaining ones around the Carfax  :( the other gas lamps were converted to CFL and fitted with a baffle cone in December 2010.

For those interested, Tim Luckett has a gas lamps section which includes many photographs. In terms of London, Tim has pinpointed 4 locations worthy of note:

South Kensington
Hyde Park
Green Park (I've walked through this park at night and seen them in action)
Covent Garden (the ones I'm most familiar with - they are stirrup mounted)

I  like how the london ones have been retrofitted with control boxes that work off batteries, complete with solenoid valves.
