I was thinking the battery unit could be wired in a way that it operates the photocell which in turn 'widens' the gas flow at night and by day the gas flow is narrowed making the 'flame' less noticeable. The box could have been mounted in by opening one of the panes as the ones in Horsham have 'pane doors' fitted so that the 'flame' part of the lantern can be replaced if necessary. |

Well, solenoid valves can operate momentarily off a battery supply (think of the flush mechanisms for urinal cisterns - the PIR sends a pulse to the solenoid to open the valve, and when done the PIR Timer sends a pulse in reverse polarity to the solenoid to close it), and so these only use power for a split second. the valve is either '1' (open) or '0' (closed), and so all you need is a photocell unit to work off batteries and send a pulse at nightfall to change the valve to the 1 position (and a seperate series of pulses sent to the mantles to ignite the gas), and in the morning a reverse pulse should be sent to close the valve. If the batteries are dead the lantern will either dayburn or be off at night. |

Thanks Alex... believe it or not, the close-up photos are again using my technique of sticking the camera to look through binoculars! |

Those are excellent pictures. Well done. It just dawned on me that those lanterns which don't work, may have flat batteries for the photocell operated valve. |

Very possibly. As I think I've said before, the valve will be a 'flip flop' operation valve, whereby power is only needed to change the state of the valve... if the batteries could not power the valve when the lantern was on then it would dayburn - and so if the lantern stays off then the reverse may be true. |

I wonder if some of the gas lamps that still exist are listed in the same way that the Richardson Candles now are? |

I don't know....... I think the Candles are the first street lights to ever get listed status. |
