They've probably saved them for another time when accessibility is easier.

Exactly, especially if work was done by a subcontractor. It is likely that good old Health and Safety had a part to play, with something like 8 different risk assesments made per lantern changed or some other equally stupid number, so that when the crews got to a slightly tricky installation that fell foul of just one risk assesment then they said no and so the old lanterns remain.

The WRTL/Indal Stela LED lantern from 2008, was revolutionary in the way its optics were designed utilising individual plastic lenses over each LED to amplify the light output and form the beam pattern.

The lens technology is now evolving even further as noticed in the Advanced LEDs Clara lantern - pictures courtesy of Clare.

In this view, the bottom array of LEDs are nearest the column and have diffuser style lenses.

The top array is nearest the road and has lenses designed to spread the light. They almost look like the "wings" of an ESLA.

With the lantern operating, the different beams are clear to see.

Interestingly, the Holophane V-Max uses exactly the same principle. These images are from examples in Nottingham. This version is a side road variant mounted on a sleeved concrete column. The coloured square is used to denote wattage.

A zoomed view of the image shows that the both of the 4 LED modules nearest the centre of the lantern use diffuse lenses, where as the outer modules have beam forming lenses.

The same principle applies to the main road version.

Finally, a Thorn R2L2 lantern in Newbury, unfortunately as the image was taken from a distance, the design of the optics aren't clear, although the wiring to the LED modules are!

The Holophane V-Max is an interesting shape. The main road version reminds me of flights on an arrow.

Shame they can't tell the difference between Phosco and Thorn lanterns!

Similar retrofits have been mentioned before. I actually have a couple of those square section LED lamps they show on their web page - but they came from elsewhere.

Hi all,

Obviously not street light enthusiasts who wrote the website lol.

Here is a pic of a LED lamp I picked up one day. This retrofit would replace a 42W PL lamp and doesn't require any gear. Just remove the old gear and plug in the new lamp.

Regards,

Andrew.

Yeah you're right there and hopefully the Riga lanterns .

I can imagine this will lead to many instances of faulty or failed retrofit LED lamps being replaced "temporarily" with regular SON, only for it to go pop the second power is applied...
