Can anyone clarify for me the difference between Merecury Vapour lamps (125W) bearing the following labels:  MBU   MBF/U  MBFR/U?

In particular, I am interested if there is likely to be any differences in their lighting spectra - or if they are intended to be operated using different ballast units.

Many thanks.

I haven't heard of the MBFR/U classification but the other two are both commonly used.

MBU refers to mercury lamp without a fluorescent coating, these tend to produce a more blue /green light.

MBF/U refers to a mercury lamp that has a fluorescent coating on the inside of the outer bulb. The coating converts some of the UV light into visible light, producing a whiter light than MBU types.

They can both run on the same gear.

More info here.

Thank you for this clarification.  I had suspected that the F might possibly be associated with some kind of spectral shift by the addition of fluorescent material to the glass envelope.     I use an MBU lamp in a moth trap - and noted that the newer replacement lamps I have are all marked MBFU - so they will actually not be as effective I suspect, as moth's visible spectrum is in the UV.

The "R" indicates a reflectorised lamp in the form of a spotlight-shaped lamp.
