I'm rather surprised too. For a light source which hasn't been in common use since at least the mid 80s, the fact such a large amount of these lamps has survived so long amazes me. I presume they have been lying dormant in a council storeroom somewhere for years before they decided to sell them on. That's the only reason I can think of for their long life!  :?

Later on this year i'm going to purchase a few of them as I have two of the Sunbed ballasts and my Alpha 6 is wired for twin SLI. 2 200w lamps should produce rather allot of light!!!!!

It will be interesting to see them powered up as well. Apparently the SLI lamp gives off a lilac colour rather than neon red when warming up. I don't think they were ever used in my area, sadly, as I never saw one in my childhood days.

Apologies on resurrecting this topic but i've got 3 140 W SLI lamps to date - 27, 48 & 72. These are all Thorn branded, first two are used examples.

Thanks in advance.

According to the excellent Lamp Date Calculator pages by Phil MacBean, 27 is March 1968, 76 or 84, 48 is December 1969, 77 or 85, and 72 is December 1971 or 79.

Production of SLI lamps finished in 1986 according to Lamptech and there are probably subtle construction or franking differences that would allow you to pin down the exact year. If your lamps are Thorn, not Thorn-EMI, they will be prior to 1979, but I am not presently aware of the other indications of a more precise date.

Thank you for that Chris. I'm now dating all my vintage tungsten lamps and fluorescent tubes...

I think my SLI's are the following:

Date Code 27 is March 76 as it says Thorn on it.
Date Code 48 is December 85 as it says Thorn EMI on it - makes it one of the last SLI lamps made.
Date Code 72 is December 79 as it says Thorn EMI on it.

Today I got my first SLI lamp, it is a brand new  60W GEC lamp, can anyone help with the dating of this lamp?

The date stamp are the two characters after "Made in England". Despite the large image sizes, its not that clear on the first picture as the lettering is at an angle and also the print itself is blurred.

If it says "QE" which I think it does, it makes it May '83 which would tie up with the style of the wrapper - in that its not 1960s/70s wrapping.

Indeed it is "QE" stamped on it so May 1983 it is, so it would put it around 3 years before production ended.
I do like these lamps, much more interesting then the common sox lamp.
Just need some gear or lantern to run it now!
