SLI production ended in 1985, so yours is from near the end. An 80W MBF or 90W SOX ignitor ballast - not Leak - can be used. Wire as a conventional fluorescent lamp and use an electronic fluorescent starter. |

Could a 55W sox ballast be used as it's closer to 60W? |

Nope, current too low (0.6A) and as a result voltage are too high (~92v). MBF and 90W SOX are closer in current terms - this is the critical thing. All discharge lamps are fairly intolerant to voltage overloads providing the current is correct. The type of discharge determines the voltage across it. MBF 80W is around 100v and 0.8A where as 60W SLI is 0.8A and around 80V so approx 64W. 90W SOX is 0.9A/100V but if used for SLI, you will get 0.9A (bit high) and around 65V giving approx 58.5W. Better to under run on amps rather than volts. |

So an 80W MBF ballast would be best then I do have some of them kicking around. |

Hi, I am thinking about purchasing a 200W SLI lamp to add to my SOX lamp collection and any advice would be greatly appreciated what is the best ballast to use ? 150W SON or a 160W or 180W sun bed ? What method of starting glow starter and what type & wattage ? Or a parallel ignitor - what type of SOX or SON and wattage. Would this lamp fit a 3 foot fluorescent batten? Regards Bob |

If you look back through this topic... Phosco152 wrote: The issue with these lamps is that the proper SLI ballasts are not available for them. However Colin Grimes tells me that a 160W sunbed ballast will operate these lamps. According to Lamptech, the 200W SLI needs 145V at 1.55A. I have just found on Ebay a suitable 160W sunbed ballast which does indeed operate at 1.5A. The user has 245 in stock!!! Might be the time to purchase some of these old relics. (I have already and now have a way of running them ) Of course the Ebay link no longer works! You need to get the right voltage and current so, SOX/SON lamp ballasts aren't suitable as the current is too low. Use an electronic starter from a fluorescent tube, a 4-80W type will work, or if you can find one, a 125W version. Wire ballast and starter as per a fluorescent lamp. Don't use a SON ignitor as the starting ignition pulse is too severe. The lamp should fit in a 3ft fitting - or just by some end caps and make your own. |

More here: Phosco152 wrote: 60W SLI warming up: I also powered up the 200W SLI lamps and after a bit of a "senior moment" realising that a starter switch is required as the ballast is a single coil type and not a Leak Transformer used for 140W SLI, we achieved this: Near to full power (excuse my string of terminal blocks...) I used an electronic fluorescent starter switch which heated the electrodes causing them to glow yellow and then as it starts the tube "ping" the violet discharge starts. There was none of the dramatic light show and flickering of the 140W SLI - I’m not sure if this was because the electrodes were pre-warmed compared with the "cold strike" resonant start of the Leak gear for 140W SLI, or the design of the GEC arc tube which is a different cross section. I will sometime try the 140W SLI on a simple ignitor ballast and fluorescent starter and see if that gives the same "softer" start. Run up time was much reduced compared to 140W SLI (or even 135/180W SOX). I got an operating current of around 1.2A using an ac clamp meter which is slightly under the ideal of 1.5A. I believe Chris M got around 2A a few weeks back when he tried his on the same type of ballast. |

Hi, thanks for info. Got a wire wound ballast for a 125 W mercury vapour lamp that, will that be ok ? Regards Bob |

No, current and voltage both too low. |

I've been doing a research on the net about 200W SLI Lamps & found out they are 2 types. 1 type is the GEC SLI/H & it is rated at 20500 lumens at 135 volts 1.6 amps & has a 10000 hours life. It can be operated on a series ballast & glow start circuit . The other type is a Thorn SLI/H HO 7 is rated at 28050 lumens at 145 volts ( 1.55 amps lamp lit ) at only 6000 hours life. However, the ballasts differ as the starting current is about 6 amps, so no glow start & the new luminaries had to have a leakage reactance autotransformer ballast. The 2 types of lamp remained in production alongside each other. |
