Bury Council have started to replace failed 35w Sox Lamps with LED retrofts.

I have no idea which lamp they are using but there are some pretty antique lanterns running LED now including

This (and the next one up) https://goo.gl/maps/Db4QBtESdVz

and

https://goo.gl/maps/TR2e85dRctw

Along with numerous Beta 5s

Bury have been buying lots of Philips stuff in recent years.

Nice to see these veteran lanterns are still in active service, for the time being at least!

I imagine the output from the retrofit LED lamps will be somewhat throttled by the existing SOX (nee SO/H) optics, but on a quiet looking residential area like this, I wouldn't think this would be any great issue.

It would be interesting to see them lit up, especially those Phosco top entries!

Mind you, some vintage lanterns take on a totally different look with an LED fitted.

Whilst browsing Ebay , I noted another type of SOX retrofit lamp, rather than the more common Magnatech or INDO type, mentioned a few posts back.

This one is made by Venture Lighting. An impulse buy and a few days later...

Image

Looking on line, it doesn't seem to be listed by Venture Lighting themselves anymore, I couldn't find any stockists either, although a search did show up an image of an older version of the lamp with differently designed vents.

Unlike the INDO/Magntech designs which use a small number of high powered LEDs, this design has 3 rows of LEDs with 28 per row, so 84 LEDs in total. The heatsink is covered by the overall translucent sleeve, so it will rely on cooler air being drawn through the tube to dissipate the heat. After several hours running it was only slightly warm however.  The design obviously isn't waterproof, so how it performs in leaky Beta 5s will be of interest. The bayonet cap is rotatable with respect to the main body.

Image

Literally the day after it arrived, I noticed a Beta 5 in my village with a failed lamp, had been fitted with a LED retrofit.

Image

The triple row of LEDs clearly being visible, meaning it couldn't be an INDO or Magnatech variant.

Daylight confirmed, it was the same lamp I had purchased. The V of the Venture logo could be made out through the bowl.

Image

At night, it was surprisingly effective, dare I say it, a better light spread due to the soft cut off characteristic of SOX lanterns, than the hard cut off of the Luma next to it.

Wiltshire have probably now made the decision for a wholesale conversion to LED with dimming and expansion of CMS. Dimming will mean new lanterns, so it will be interesting to see if this is a temporary installation, or whether a less ambitious LED program - especially in rural areas like mine which aren't covered by CMS at present,  will see LED retrofits as a more cost effective solution. However, the Beta 5s in my village aren't generally that water tight.....

Another LED retrofit fitted in my village today...

And on its own - as the supply was disconnected for the conversion, the lantern was running all night for the first night before reverting to part night operation on night 2.

In February 2018, I posted a communication letter from Philips that gave details of the end of SOX lamp production.

I was away on holiday at the time, therefore was unable to remind you again, however I trust you managed to get your "last orders" in before the July deadline?

Daftness aside, I do wonder if any of our LAs make some last minute purchases?

Having recently passed through Belgium and the Netherlands, there are still significant inventories of SOX street lighting. Renewals have been at a rate like we traditionally had in the UK (slow and steady), unlike modern day UK where areas get purged all at once. Add to this the remaining SOX lighting in the UK and Ireland, and that there are a few other countries in Europe that also have SOX, I am surprised that SOX lamps are being phased out as early as they are, as there are such a significant number of installations remaining. SOX is far more common now than SLI was when it was discontinued, and SOX is far more common than CDM Elite TW.

Whilst it would still be a major investment to purge the remaining SOX from the Netherlands, as a country they seem to be well placed financially to do this. Belgium on the other hand with its SOX assets still probably running into the millions currently looks like it is screwed and at high risk of major unplanned blackouts.

Are we starting to see some Larger wattage SOX LED replacements?

Spotted this a few weeks ago.

Until recently this was SOX like the lamp s further along outside the pub.
The lantern is an Eleco GR150? So i'm guessing a 135W SOX.
The LED looking lamp appears to fill the full length of the bowl.

Here is the best I could do of the lamp in the day

Yes they have taped the bowl up over the cell so it probably wont be long before the bowl blows off and we can see the "lamp".

GSV is probably a better bet.

Bury use the Resox lamp for the 35W (and some 55W) retrofits. But I can't find any trace of a 135/90W retrofit lamp from any reputable supplier.

The above lamp is now not the only lamp with a LED retrofit. I have now spotted quite a number of LED retrofits, quite a few in the various types of Phillips MA series lanterns.

There seems to be an issue with the angle the lampholder is installed with some lanterns not offering much light from one side as if the led replacement is installed at 90º to how it was intended.

I am pretty sure there is also another lantern with one of these failed lamps in.

So in Bury the March of the LED retrofit SOX Tube continues with all wattages of SOX lanterns getting LED lamps.

Some suit it more than others. The Beta 5s carry it off no problem as do the MA series lanterns.

Some of the more oddball stock in Bury doesn't fare so well.

It appears they are using the Venture Lighting RE-SOX product and reliability so far seems good.

One oddball that I noticed was a lantern that appears to be SOX orange, however on closer inspection it had clearly been relamped with an LED lamp but was giving off a very SOXY orange glow. I need to go back in the day an look if the bowl has been sprayed, the lamp has a filter or if it has been fitted with some sort of LED lamp that has an orange colour. Interestingly the lamp is in a conservation area, but it is a BETA 5 so i am split over it being something to do with the conservation area.

So in the Netherlands some of the catenary on the motorways have been retrofitted with an LED module made by a company called Saled. https://www.saled.nl/en/projecten/rijkswaterstaat/

Philips also offers SOX and SON retrofit bulbs.
