The nearest MBF lanterns to me are two Thorn Beta 4s on a private industrial estate in Fleetwood. Sadly, neither work. There used to be three but the other column was knocked down by a lorry. The last time these worked was about 1992 iirc!

By a real stroke of luck I acquired an Osram 60 Watt SOI/H sodium lamp today along with a Crompton 85 Watt SOI/H, a Crompton 60 Watt (pre re-rated) SOX and a very early Philips 55 Watt SOX (Porcelain cap). The Crompton 85 Watt SOI/H is an unused example but is missing its packaging.

The early Osram SOI/H shows how the sodium content of the discharge tube can congregate in one spot, and how the use of the dimples in the discharge tube of the later Crompton SOI/H lamp helped address the problem.

These weren't ebay wins, but came about as the result of winning an unrelated item.

Very nice acquisitions there Claire. Do you intend to power them up?

I haven't really thought about Stephen, but I may do so at some point, I certainly have the correct gear for them. With them having stood for many years, I am aware that I would need running up for several hours to ensure that they would strike again.

They're down in the garage, but I'll take a look over the weekend.

Looking at a photo I took this afternoon, the 85 Watt SOI has a date code of 63.

Although the date calculator doesn't specifically mention Crompton lamps, the code of 63 used with the Thorn decoder or the Osram/GEC one, both give dates of March 1963 which would sound feasible.

Date codes as best I can tell for the other three lamps are as follows:

Orsam 60-Watt SOI/H = W1 ...?

Crompton 60-Watt SOX = J6

Philips 55-Watt SOX = OE
