M4 is indeed December 1964, which would make it one of the first SOX lamps. Since re-rating didn't occur until the late 1960s it would be 100W.

Lamp date calculator here. Note it is letter case specific.

More on SOX from the excellent Lamptech site here and here.

Thanks for the reply, i'm chuffed that its a 100w SOX lamp although well used it still works. It came to me by accident in the wrong packet, it was in a Osram 90w Supersox packet along with 2 other 90w Supersox lamps.
Thanks for the links I have a lot of Osram date codes on sox lamps I would like to decode.

Do you know how to decode the modern osram sox lamps such as N698 or N768?

Wow, that was a lucky find! Try this for modern Osram lamps.

A few weeks back I acquired some used mercury vapour MB lamps.

One had very unusual arc tube supports in the form of spiral springs.

Unfortunately there is no date stamp on it, but the Philips logo is without (the usual) shield.

Interestingly Lamptech show an earlier generation MA lamp of Dutch construction with a similar arrangement. The lamp is from 1956. The logo is the same as mine.

However a British MB lamp from 1964 shows the more common metal strip holders. The logo now has the shield background.

So the chances are my lamp is late 50s/early 60s and possibly of Dutch manufacture. It still works as well although the light output is only around half that of  a new lamp.

I have just acquired a rare Siemens 'sieray' 125W MB/V lamp thats new old stock. Never knew MB lamps came in the Vertical cap up variety. Also unusual in that its a clear pear shaped lamp.

My latest additions are a pair of "GEC Truelite" 80W 3BC MBF lamps dating from May 1986.

Im looking for early low wattage mercury lamp info guys (and gals!). Specifically the 80w and 125w versions from around the 1930s and 40's. I have seen photos of them that are in the shape of a GLS lamp, but with a diffused coating, so you cannot see inside the lamp. Am I right in thinking that this coating did not affect the light colour much, unlike later colour corrected mercury lamps, and so simply gave a 'softer' light rather than a bright point of light from the arc tube? Therefore lanterns fitted with this style of lamp would give the same blue-green light of their larger brothers? (250w-400w)

Mike.

Original style low wattage mercury lamps were pear shaped like 150-200W GLS lamps and had a pearl coating like GLS lamps, which only diffused the light and did not act as a colour correcting phosphor.
