I've always like the design of these. There was one near York city centre, but it mysteriously dissappeared a few weeks ago (with any luck, it was kept at the council depot).

Another place to see them is Northallerton and Eaglescliffe areas (mercury and SOX versions), and a good few can be seen from the york-middlesbrough train

I'll see when I can get up to Middlesbrough then accross to Eaglescliff. Hopefully I can swipe my brothers camera without him noticing so I can get a few snaps.  ;)

Ideally you'll need a bike to get around. Northern and Transpennine don't mind you taking bikes on board... and since the bike area was moved to coach D, Crosscountry seem to turn a blind eye to people boarding with bikes (but it's still at the disgression of staff).

You'll still be best getting a train to eaglescliffe station though - as cycling there from M'bro will take quite a while!

I myself haven't explored that area yet... there's enough in Thornaby, Stockton, Billingham, Redcar, and around Hartlepool to keep you busy for weeks and weeks! At the moment the closest I've got to hartlepool itself is Seaton Canoe...

Well I'm getting a new bike shortly as me current one has had its day so I'll be able to do longer distances on the new one. If possible we could do a cycle roadtrip to see the 'golden oldies' in Eaglescliff.

I normally do my bike trips on Thursdays and Fridays (sometimes a wednesday, but not very often)... but if we are thinking of arranging something like this then it'll have to be discussed in a non-public section of the site - We've been recently changing bits so that General Chat (I think) and one other part is non-public and for 'valued' members only.

If we end up that way we could always try popping into the DW Lighting depot in M'bro - see if they'll let us have anything! They shut before 5pm though.

The Thorn Gamma 9 which appears to be different sizes for different lamp types. Typical British manufacturing inefficiencies - it would be cheaper to produce just one size of lantern, and the Gamma 9 already duplicated others in the Gamma range in terms of lamp type.

The fluorescent version was the only one supplied with integral control gear. I will assume this is because that the current loss over the length of cable, if the gear were remote, would be so much it'd stop the lamps from striking.
