:D  don't worry, I understand your doubts - I was extremely shocked when I first heard of these two lanterns too as I felt there was absolutely no point of having them! They followed the Malaga/Streetfighter design and took higher wattages.

This European website proves their existence.

Yep, that has proved me wrong! It's no surprise they didn't last for very long on the UKL website then. Quite surprising really. Infact, I could see a 70w SON-T version of the MI26 being more popular!

Well there used to be a 70w SON-I version of the MI50, the MI55. Don't think it was all that popular though!

Philips are getting a bit like GEC with their many lanterns which all do the same job! It gives us a bit of variety though I suppose. I never knew an SGS103 or 104 existed either and I agree, what was the point when they've got the SGS203, Trafficvision, Iridium, Selenium, AluRoad and I think there's another one I've forgot!  :?

I believe the MI55 is still available but only as the "Kombipack" security kit which includes a wall mount bracket.

A bit like the WRTL SRL35 still being available as the Whitecroft Mistral Wall. It's funny how companies discontinue aged lantern designs but carry on making them for security light packages. It reminds me of when car manufacturers discontinue a type of car but carry on making the estate version of it long after the hatchback version.

I always think SOX seems a bit naff for security lighting - surely the objective is to use white as opposed yellow light!

It's better when used on the side of farm sheds, I'll admit!

It maybe that sox works better with security cameras. The response of CCTV cameras is different to the human eye - peak sensitivity occurs at a different wavelength.

Yet councils often replace SOX with SON or MH because they believe it gives better colour rendering for CCTV!

I must admit a lot of security lighting around here is SOX and farms do seem to favour SOX. The farm near to me has quite a collection of lanterns- a Beta 5 above the barn, a Gamma 6 and a WRTL 2600 on the access road and an MRL6 on a really tall, flimsy-looking pole at the back of the farm buildings. Also when my road and the adjoining road were relit in 2000, the farmer stored the old columns, brackets/sleeves and lanterns on his farm. They were there for quite some time and I half expected to see one of the old installations erected on his farm!  :)

There has been much discussion about the differences between the Beta 79 and 99 and if the latter actually ever existed. This from the Yahoo Streetlight group courtesy of Colin Grimes may be of interest.

Quote:
A while back we were trying to identify the difference between the Thorn Beta 79
and Beta 99, I have finally found the answers they are as follows in the Thorn
Beta 79 were fitted with a smooth reflector and clear shallow bowl, Later
with the introduction of the SON-T lamp, the Beta 79 were fitted with a Facet
(Hammered Effect Reflector and Shallow Bowl with a slight etched effect
(slightly Frosted)

With the introduction of the Beta 99 the reflector over the lamp was improved with
sided wings to throw more light between the lanterns/Columns (thus increase the
Spacing) also a Deeper Prismatic Bowl was fitted to the Lantern, also later Beta
79's were fitted with the same deeper Prismatic Bowl to increase the performance
of the lantern, also existing shallow bowls were sold for existing lanterns,

Re the 100w Lantern in Both the Beta 79 and Beta 99, the lampholder is fitted at
the Street End of the Lantern, this is due to being a bigger lamp , if fitted
the same way as the 50/70w SON, 80/125w MBF versions the arctube would be too
far forward and would redirect too much light towards the pavements' instead of
the street.
