So the difference is side wing reflectors on the beta 99... otherwise the differences are clear as mud!

Does he mean that the Beta 99 has the side reflectors that are part of the same sheet of metal as the top reflector, rather than separate pieces of reflectors?

So would a shallow bowled Beta 79 with a refractor on the bowl still mean it was a Beta 79? Nobody else seems to have seen a shallow bowl with a refractor in the middle of it, but there is one about 10 minutes walk away from me!

I reckon it'd be made of the same sheet... but without seeing on in person, I can't say for sure.

I take it that the Beta 79 and 99 is a bit similar to the GEC Z5580 and Z5590 i.e. same design but slight modifacations. I myself haven't seen a Beta 99 so it would be hard to tell I'm guessing its the reflectors must be one sheet and not 3 seperate pieces like the 79.

Well, we both may have seen beta 99's but not known it!!
The closest place to both of us for Beta 99's (apparently) is Sheffield.

The Beta 79s on the Fylde Coast have a grooved refractor in the bowl. The ones in Fylde Borough are usually the deep-bowled version. Does this make those Beta 99s? As I'm still not sure?  :?

In regards to the Beta 99 debate, I was thinking today that we shouldn't be so sceptical about its existence. It was common in the days of lanterns having codes (as opposed to modern 'named' lanterns such as the Iris) to have unusual add on digits for different features/attachments. For instance the '2601' denotes the top-entry version of the 2600 and the 'SRL8F' denotes the SRL8 with its newest type of reflector.
