Thanks for the info Phosco. Other than the base casting they're extremely similar!

Blackpool had many a saucer at one time as seen in this snowy image. There were the fishbowl and the octagonal type along the Prom until the early 80s. The description mentions  this pic being in the 1970s but based on my geek-like knowledge of the tramway I can say with some certainty that it was 1981    :ugeek:

Never seen Harrowside as a destination before. Also, that's quite a recovery truck there! It looks like it's just beyond North Pier... possibly before that hotel that gets in the way of the arrow-straight tramway was built, maybe.
Also, the balloon looks like it's smiling with the snow pattern on the front!

Those lanterns look like the octagonal Flying Saucers, I wonder if they were only two-lamped like the Preston ones?

It was in the middle of winter when Balloon trams aren't used on service so the engineers had probably been messing around with the blinds as they do   The trams were just brought out specifically to clear the snow, note the snowplough on the front. Your location is spot on by the way!

Sadly these lanterns were long gone by the time of my earliest memories of streetlighting so I can't say for certain but being mounted as high as they were I would imagine they had three lamps. There were some fishbowl lanterns along the Prom as well, mostly at major road junctions further south than the pictured section and around other parts of the town and they were generally more common than the octagonal type.
