Over 90W, should be operated in the horizontal plane as the longer arc tube will have a greater temperature gradient across its length and which will prevent proper vapourisation if the arc tube is vertical. The u bend end may never get hot enough and sodium is likely to collect in the u bend resulting in insufficent sodium vapour in the upper part of the lamp.

Are the lamps horizontal in big SOX post-top lanterns then, like GEC Flying Saucer lanterns as I always thought the lamps in these would be vertical?

Yes, they are horizontal, and go lengthways across the inside of the lantern. Only the phosco P110 is a vertical SOX post top big enough of holding a 90w SOX lamp - however only 55w is the max catered for gear-wise.

So they only had one SOX lamp in a GEC Flying Saucer? Didn't the SON versions have 2 or 3 lamps in? I always used to imagine the SOX saucers had maybe 3 vertical lamps in before I read this thread!  ;)

There is an abandoned flying saucer in Hartshead on which looks like it on a fibreglass column. It on an abandoned piece of land near to the Cleckheaton turn off (the buildings in the aerial photo have since been demolished). The only thing to remain is the column and lantern.

GEC Flying Saucer's could hold 3 SOX lamps in a triangle shape.

Yes, and the Phosco P222's could hold THREE 135w SOX lamps!

(I tried to post this a few minutes ago, but the site went down for me...)

Interesting... just after the M62.
If the buildings have been flattened then the site is being redeveloped...

And it's a GEC saucer then, not a Z5680 or Gamma 8??

It looks more of a GEC than a Thorn.
