I posted this on Sabre but maybe someone here can help. The caption with this picture says c1980 which I assume is due to the cars which may or may not be new at the time of the picture. I feel the picture is later than that because of the lanterns. Anyone know what they are?

They seem to look like WRTL MRL6s (well those examples would have been GEC Z8600s but you get the idea.)

To me the Cortina and Granada look the same from a distance but the Cortina has a curved line to the bottom of the side windows while the Granada is straight.

Were 8600's used as early as 1980?

I think they started to get featured in catalogues around the 1978-1979 mark, so it is possible. Not to mention they could have been trialled in that area before they were added to the catalogue.

I didn't realise they were that old. Prior to the late 80's I've never seen SON lanterns like that. The only type I saw before that were the Alpha 3/Turtle's where the bowl covered the whole of the bottom of the canopy.

Z8600's originally appeared as Mercury lanterns! York ones certainly were, as half the bowls on them are burnt to a crisp!

I didn't realise the MRL6 design was that old either. In my area they were only introduced in 1988 and then they started to spread like wildfire (hmmmm, a bit like the Stela is now!  ;) ). Prior to this the group A SON lantern of choice was the Thorn Alpha 8. At that time, the MKIII Alpha 8 had just started being used in 1987.

I've never seen a mercury Z8600! That would certainly look strange! I bet York was an early adopter of them then!

I used to think that in 1988. I used to think of the MRL6 as a very modern, futuristic lantern. At the time I used to wish they'd replace a lot of the older Alpha 3s and SOX lanterns with them whereas now I hate to see lanterns like those being replaced!

The GEC Z8600 was designed by GEC as modern, compact, cheaper to make and more versatile lantern than their 85XX Turtles. GEC used to publish an in house technical journal. Years ago when I was at college doing my A-levels I read a full technical article on the Z8600 series. I wish I could find a copy of it now!
