I would be inclined to agree that this lantern is possibly manufactured in the UK by Advanced-LEDs. Although perhaps not the most aesthetically pleasing lantern around, it is better than others and does seem to quite effective when in action. I spotted an example close to the town centre of Much Wenlock in Shropshire. The design is quite utilitarian, especially when seen from underneath. The layout and position of the individual LED modules, in relation to the optics seem to be at variance with the more standardised approach such as used in the Stella.  Just goes to show that LED technology is developing all the time. It is also good that the lantern is made here, albeit with Cree LEDs and Philips drivers!.

Interestingly, if you spin the camera to the other side of the road on the above GSV image, you can see another of these lanterns dayburning.

Thank you for the replies. I have looked at the dayburning lantern and found that the other one on the same alley is also dayburning. It might be linked because the lanterns are controlled by nodes.

I have also sent these for sale on Ebay

(Last photo of listing)

The Blackpool ones are Advanced LED 'Clipper' lanterns. Water sealing on some (but not all) of them apparently needs improving.

So it also seems the Preston guy has updated stock to LED stuff including some of those wierd LEDs from the Wigan area. if I wasn't working, I'd pop over and see if I could haggle him down a bit! (especially with a Thorn Isaro and a Clipper available)

There's one like this in Thirsk, also near a (former) Esso garage.

It's nice to know these lanterns are still in use, albeit with casual replacements by Philips and Thorn products here and there.

I recall seeing the Aureoles en route to either Halifax or Bradford many years ago (unfortunately I didn't possess a camera at the time). Even then, they were probably amongst the last installations to survive and in surprising quantity too. Trafford MBC at one time, still had Aureoles on its books in the Urmston / Flixton areas but these had gone by the late 80s, having been replaced by GR150s.

Ideally, the installations on the B6138 should be recorded for posterity, whist still intact., perhaps with some low key but diplomatic soundings with the LA or relevant parish clerk about future plans.

We all know how fast an area can be purged of its SOX stock in the name of progress, therefore it would be a pity for those rare survivors to go for scrap too.
