I was in the city centre, and I noticed that the SUGG heritage lanterns that replaced the Revo Festivals (now on their 2nd birthday) aren't ageing too well. Three or four of them have a small amount of water/dirt in the bowl, one is dayburning, and another has had the MH lamp replaced with a SON one!

I don't think they'll last as long as the Festivals do you?  ;)

they don't quite have "50 years of service" written on them!

I bet they don't even get half that. Most of these so-called 'heritage' lanterns seem quite cheap and nasty to me as if because it's 'heritage' means that the build quality doesn't have to be as good as a normal, functional lantern.

the other thing too, as I've said elsewhere, is that there are so many different manufacturers offering their take on heritage designs - some lanterns made out of copper, and some really posh designs - that it makes me annoyed that local councils almost always go for the Albany lookalike for roads, or the Windsor lookalike for paths.

The Windsor lookalikes look quite picturesque if a little overused but the Albanys just look ludicrous to me. They're much too big to look authentic! I like the DW Windsor Iffley as it reminds me of the Revo Bell-Top (mostly because of the bowl). However DW Windsor are one of the worst offenders for tacky heritage lighting otherwise!  :x

The iffley is a decent lantern, as it's in proportion and looks old. There is one in the village of Stillingfleet (near the A19 and Cawood) that lights a bus stop, and it has decent optics.
But otherwise, I'm not too keen on a lot of their other heritage stuff... too much of a  muchness.

I agree with the heritage being in inverted commas there - a lot of them don't really give a realistic portrayal. If anything, heritage lanterns should be SOX! I quite like Metrcraft Victorias and Cromwells if not overused; I'm not really a fan of Albanies though. I would even argue that the Iffley isn't very nice either

Or mercury, even better!  8-)

I like the Iffley because it looks like an old group B top-entry mercury lantern and that is my favourite genre of lantern overall.

The Iffley is a bit like a bloated Revo Prefect....
Also worthy of note is that the original olden-days lanterns were gearless, whereas today's 'heritage' lanterns are gear in head - which makes them a lot larger to start off with. Then add in the requirement for cut-off optics, meaning a large reflector, and you end up with a big lantern... well, bigger than the type of lantern it's supposed to emulate.
