The latest Urbis 'switch on' has details of the Evolo's success in Devon. Meanwhile Black Evolos have started being used in the London Borough of Harringey. Roads such as this which had SOX survivors are now lit with Evolos. However they look absolutely fantastic; they are so sleek and stylish. I certainly prefer them to Sapphires and Arcs.

The successor to the Altra has been launched on the continent, the Aresa. It's like mixing an Evolo with an Altra.

Hmm looks like an Altra with a new canopy. Several intresting points, the photometry plots show no light emitted above 75 degrees to the vertical, just goes to show how given the similar light sources, how SOX lanterns such as the XGS103 could be redesigned to be more dark sky friendly. Also the use of internal louvres as an option to control light spillage even more, is a far more elegant design than external shields such as used on the Iridium. The louvres almost hark back to the aeroscreened lanterns of the 50 and 60s.

I saw a few new Evolos today, Devon style, grey lanterns mounted post-top on 6m tapered aluminium columns. Whilst they are quite slender in style they are quite lengthy. It's almost as if somebody at Urbis took a rolling pin to the moulds, as the lanterns aren't that deep, but quite long.

Yes, I hope their staff can tell their Aresa from their Evolo.

Isn't it funny how streetlighting companies use names for all their lantern models now rather than numbers? In the past it was Z this and GR that now we have fancy titles like Evolo and Aresa which sound more like Japanese hatchbacks!

The Aresa has now been introduced to the Urbis Topaz range:

Switch On article:

Quote:
Our new Aresa is designed to be a cost effective, high performance luminaire ideal for schemes requiring a white light solution - perfect for residential roads. Its compact body and sleek lines allow it to blend neatly into the urban environment.

The Aresa is equipped with a prismatic refractor, which provides a high level of photometric performance and luminance uniformity. This means that column spacings can be maximised, whilst glare is reduced to a minimum. Louvres can also be integrated into the refractor to control the light in situations where spillage is an issue.

Low energy consumption is ensured as the Aresa only comes fi tted with an electronic ballast and is designed to be compatible with remote management dimming systems. The Aresa 2 & 3 are designed to take compact fl uorescent lamps up to 36W and 80W respectively, although an easy upgrade to a LED optic is in development. For more details on the Aresa, contact Steve Edwards on 01274 740621.

Advantages:
Compact luminaire with clean design
Sturdiness and longevity
High-performance photometry
Optimum glare control
Louvres integrated in the protector for easy maintenance
Electronic ballast
Low energy consumption
Option to program the light intensity
Option for remote management

With the South Coast PFI coming up, could the Aresa become the side road lantern of choice for Hampshire, Southampton and West Sussex?
