The lower profile compared to the bulbous Arc or even worse Iridium, is very refreshing for a SON/MH lantern.

Not strictly about new Urbis products but news about the company - so best in this topic. 120 jobs to go at Urbis at Basingstoke. Not entirely unexpected, not only for the reasons mentioned in the article but also for the loss of UK market share following the predominance of Philips/Indal products in recent PFIs. Urbis were also widely used in Hampshire and it must have been particularly galling as Libras, Arcs and Iridiums went up on the roads around the factory a few years back replacing ZX1 and ZX3 lanterns. Ironically I personally think that some of the Urbis contemporary designs are some of the most striking and best looking compared to those from other manufacturers. Unfortunately the market for contemporary lanterns is relatively small compared to the ZX range (now in decline) and the Sapphire which has never achieved the success of the Iridium or the Arc. Although the Sapphire is popular for motorway lighting, the Iridium has been more popular several times over. |

No surprise really. Schreder have gone through a cost cutting exercise. They have rationalised product lines and relocated manufacturing from Belgium to Spain, and Britain's manufacturing base at Urbis was probably just too small to be viable. Urbis will literally just become a distributor. The ZXU1 and ZX3 are still available, but from what I can tell it is pretty much just for the UK market even though they can be found in Europe. I haven't seen any shiny new ones whilst in Belgium. |

I must say, I do find the Evolo to be a well designed lantern. On a simple straight bracket it looks good. On an L-bracket (a bracket style popular in London and Nottinghamshire) it looks good. On a S&L bracket it looks good. On a PetitJean/Stainton hockeystick bracket it looks good. Post-top it looks average, but I suppose you can't have it all. Schreder have done well to design a lantern that suits so many bracket styles. It is best left for main roads rather than side roads though, otherwise it appears a little oversize. |

Indeed, you've probably seen me singing the praises for the Evolo before on this forum. I consider myself fortunate to have one in collection - it is a stylish lantern to have. My fear is that it was launched a little too late. Had it have been launched a few years earlier, we'd be seeing more Evolos and less Arcs/Sapphires. The problem we have now is that LAs are starting to go over to LED, alas making the Evolo redundant. |

I keep meaning to go over to Preston in Lancashire, as there's a place near Bamber Bridge that has a load of them for sale (Cosmo as I recall). |
