Hi All,

Just a quick post to show you my 'new' MA90 lantern which I got last Friday. Tonight is the first time I have powered it up.  The strange thing is I think of these as new lanterns even though it will have been in service for a good 15 to 20 years.

Regards,

Andrew.

I think bringing out the Selenium was the worst thing that Philips had ever done. I cannot see the point in it when there is the Iridium, Trafficvision, Koffer and SGS203. The Selenium otherwise may just be fine for cash strapped Eastern Europe or even Greece...

I have discovered a sight guaranteed to be even worse than mini Iridiums, Warwickshire Council had made the grave error of fitting Seleniums on 5m columns on a residential street in Leamington Spa. I reckon I have been down this street before as the original lanterns were GEC Z5670s with some Thorn Beta 79 retrofits.

EPIC FAIL, Warwickshire Council, epic fail!

Thats the kind of monstrosity I was hoping would not replace the beta 5s on my road, luckily the Phosco P567A looks ok post-topped at 6m.

These did not last that long... They turned to Koffers then Evolo. Then onto Axias/TRT Aspects..

Hi all,

I need to buy some capacitors for my Philips L4135 ballasts so I decided to look in my internally geared MA60 to get the value. This was brand new old stock. I took some pics and here they are. It looks like the capacitor is a 20 micro farad cap.

Regards,

Andrew.

A word of caution, the capacitor isn't a power factor one, it is series connected with the ballast to form a resonant circuit and needs to be be rated at least 300V ac. "Normal" 240V ac power factor capacitors aren't suitable, motor run capacitors are a suitable alternative.

That's true. I remember having this discussion a while back about these capacitors forming part of a series resonant circuit with the ballast windings to generate a higher voltage to strike the lamp. As PhoscoP152 says, it is very important that the capacitor voltage be rated for 300V or above. Anything lower could result in a bang!

Regards,

Andrew.

We have the Mini Luma, the Luma 1, Luma 2 and Luma 3, and now Philips has launched the Luma Micro (12-46W).

Incidentally, a check through the Global Philips Lighting website suggests that some lanterns that were previously available with SOX lamps are no longer available with SOX lamps. Similarly, products previously available with mercury lamps are no longer available with mercury lamps.

The Philips Kegel range (Industria 2000 series) and Philips SGS203 were previously available with SOX options, but these options do not appear in the product code listings when you dig down (although are still listed in the overview in the PDFs). The SGS203 is now only available in SON it seems, and doesn't appear on the UK website for some reason.

This would suggest that the Iris is the only SOX lantern remaining.

Speaking of SOX SGS203s, 18 are for sale on a Dutch site!

I've not had much luck on this site for responses to emails :(

A while ago we speculated that Philips had discontinued the Arc. Looking at their website, the PL-L Libra does not appear to feature. The only Libra that features is an LED variant. So it appears they have discontinued their only PL-L fitting.

It makes you wonder about their other products though. For example, why do they still manufacture the Iridium? At the cheaper end of the market, the Malaga and Selenium are also available. And for the premium segment, there is the Iridium2. Demand for the Iridium must be quite low now. Just look at the UK, where Iridiums are being replaced in their tens of thousands.

So just having a quick glance at Philips UK Website, and it appears that the Malaga and Selenium have finally been discontinued, whilst the only Luma remaining is the Luma Micro.
