Well, a standard Iridium has a GRP canopy, although aluminium canopies are an option.

The aluminium canopied versions are unpopular due to their expense. This is why some councils prefer the Selenium, even though this doesn't come with electronic gear.

Quite possibly. To be honest, in some places too there is a modal shift away from egg-shaped lanterns and more towards square and oblong lanterns (2tone, QSM/S, Libra, Stela, Speedstar)

You're quite right, though don't forget there was a square/oblong craze back in the 1980s with the popularity of the SGS203 and SGS204 lanterns!

Indeed there was... what goes around comes around I suppose. From boxes to eggs and now back to boxes.

The next thing we'll know is that some manufacturer will end up producing 'Toblerone' shaped lanterns next!

Be careful what you wish for - might be onto a good thing though!

Do they run SOX or SON?

It does seem that some manufacturers are aiming for quirky designs so to capture the peoples imagination more. So longs we see more white light appearing then by all means.

Hehe - its only a visualisation I created from your idea  :) Didn't think it'd be that convincing! The light was generated though from a source in 3DS max and I chose "HID High pressure sodium" so would be son!

Would be cool to have a UKASTLE designed and manufactured lantern

I have been able to obtain some pricing information for modern lanterns. Prices below are what councils/contractors would pay.

WRTL Arc 150W SON, £170
WRTL Stela "square" approx £350
WRTL Stela "long" and "wide" are more expensive again
Philips SGS102 Streetfighter, £60

So if you want to go LED it isn't going to be cheap.....

It must cost Lancs CC a fortune buying all these Stelas then! Still they also save money by still fitting new 2600s, SRL8Fs and MRL6s which all must be quite cheap now!

I weren't expecting that.  £350 for a WRTL Stela 'roof tile', I was half expecting the price for one would have been somewhere in the price range of £180 - £210.

TBH I don't find the price too surprising given the fact the Stela is a 'novelty' lantern.

At some point in the mid-00s, I e-mailed Thorn to ask how much a single Alpha 4 costs - it was £240. I also found out that a single Alpha 2000 was £400 back then. It is therefore no surprise to see that the Arc is such an influential lantern across the UK at only £170!
