The new person in charge prefers replacing expired SOX lanterns with new SOX lanterns where the lion's share of surrounding lanterns are still SOX, so it looks like new SOX lanterns will continue to be installed in my corner of the country for some time to come! :-D

Fantastic. Enfield went through a phase (pre-PFI) of replacing failed SOX with SGS203s, but since David Webster took over in 2006 failed SOX gets replaced by new SOX lanterns - not that there is much SOX to replace these days mind you :(

You should make a suggestion that they replace expired SON with SOX too to save energy

To be honest, I think PFIs should have to follow new guidelines which see the end of using SON and MH. Instead, they should restricted to LED, CosmoPolis or CFL. (I would say SOX but sadly I can't imagine PFIs realistically using it on a mass scale!)

I'd just be happy if PFI spec guidlines that had to be followed including a colour-rendering target, whereby the light output had to have certain %ages of different colours in the visible light spectrum... and that those percentages were such that it was not acheivable for SON lighting (only White SON), so that CDM, Cosmo, CFL, LED, and CDM Elite could only be used on PFI's (including on main roads)

The big criminals when it comes to PFIs are the British Standards, which appear to require roads to be lit up like the insides of supermarkets. The South Coast PFI has done something other PFIs haven't done, and that is to ignore the British Standards and adopt a more sensible, environmentally friendly approach, replacing columns one-for-one and installing lots of 36w PL-L. Don't think for one minute the PFI is perfect, but it's much better than what a lot of PFIs have installed. Give me a mix of 36w Libras, 55w Libras and 60w CosmoArcs over a consistent run of 60w CosmoArcs anyday!

The British Standard is only an advisory code of best practice. Trouble is too many councils see it is mandatory, when it is not.

I guess the Blackpool PFI is good in a way, as Blackpool was 95% SON before but all new lanterns are either Cosmo or LED (LED in the back alleys only). It's just the variety and the old concrete columns I will miss!
