True, but they may as well keep the name Delta!

Not only will Philips have former Industria/WRTL products to make a decision on, but also former Indalux products for the Spanish market. When Indal took over Industria they offered both Industria and Indalux products in Spain side by side.

Not only do Indal offer both Industria and Indalux products, with Indal WRTL offering Industria and GEC products, but Philips still offer a couple of AEG and Mazda products such as the Seilkoffer catenary lantern and Comete and Estoril lanterns.

This merger is almost beginning to look like a monopoly  ;)

The European Commission competition authorities have approved the Philips takeover of Indal. The deal will be closed in January, and integration of the two companies will begin at the same time.

The competition authorities didn't think that Philips buying Indal would result in monopolisation of the markets, and that the likes of Thorn and Schreder would continue to be strong competitors. I don't know what countries they looked at exactly, because in quite a few EU countries Philips and Indal are the dominant players. Schreder is quite strong, but Thorn is really going downhill in a few countries.

Philips owning Indal has been made official, however, they will continue as separate entities. This news arises from a fellow street lighting collector.

Keeping them as separate entities could be good in a way as they may not cut so many lanterns from the market.

Nope, rationalisation of overlapping ranges will still occur as the merger will not make financial sense - they might as well have carried on as before.

What "separate entities" means is the existing Philips and Indal names will remain (for the time being). Company name is strong market force, therefore in markets/countries where Indal is more well known than Philips for lighting, it makes business sense to keep the Indal name.

Lantern ranges/sales force/distribution/warehouses etc will still all be merged/rationalised to reduce costs.

Separate entities is common, both Air France and KLM have merged yet retain their individual entities, same for British Airways and Iberia and there are plenty of other examples about.

Visiting the former Indal WRTL website, it is now called Philips WRTL!

Quite ironic that the new "Philips" homepage now has the Luma as a front page "case study" and the "Stela CO2 calculator" next to that, both of course WRTL products.

Given the relative popularity of those LED products compared to the Philips Speedstar, it seems a case of if you can't beat them, join (buy) them. The popularity of the WRTL products together with the Libra compared to the Residium for residential PFI lighting, almost certainly must have a been a key driver behind the merger.
