I pronounce  Riga as 'Thorn Rij-a'.

Interesting one. here's mine...

SOX - socks
SON - pronounced as seen (I don't say "sun").
Cosmopolis - CozMOP-olis (best describes the emphasis in the first part of the word).
GEC - gee eee cee
Iridium - Iriddyum (although I also have a habit of saying things like "nasty tat" instead of Iridium :P)
Halide - hay-lied or 'eh-lied depending on how I formed the sentence
Eleco - ee-lee-co
Halogen - for some reason I pronounce this hey-lujen, although I suspect it's not common...
CU Phosco - See You Foss-co (but sometimes I say "cue Foss-co" as well)

now here's an odd one... I've taken to pronouncing WRTL "wur-tal"... yes really

Can't think of any others, although I say incandescent weirdly as well, "in-CAN-descent".

GEC - geck (sometimes I say gee-ee-see)
SOX- socks
SON- son
WRTL- usually I spell it out, but sometimes i say wertal if I'm in a hurry)
iridium- ir-ID-ium
Halide- Hay-lied
Eleco- El-eck-o
Beta- bey-ta
Holophane syracuse- holl-a-fane sirr-a-cuse
Opalo - opp-al-oh
Riga- ree-jah
Aurora- or-ROAR-ah
LED- ell-ee-dee (I'm pretty sure nobody says lead)
Halogen- hal-oh-jen

I agree with most of yours, Aracia Cat. I do, however, insist that it's hah-lied not hay-lied; this follows the same rule as the British pronunciation of words such as 'patriotic' and 'glacier'.

I used to say 'El-eck-o' but then switched to 'Eleeeco' (Mike Barford is a bad influence!) but now I'm not so sure after speaking to sotonsteve who pronounces it 'El-eck-o'! I suppose I'm one to say 'eck-onomic' with a short 'e' (as per the BBC's advice) as opposed to the rarer 'eeek-onomic' with a long 'e', so maybe I should switch permanently to 'El-eck-o'.

...I know far fewer people who pronounce glacier and patriotic with short "A"s than those who do with long "A"s and I thought most consider the latter to be the correct way. Same as people who say "datta" instead of "day-ta" (data), the former just sounds... wrong.

You're right there about 'data', but I assure you that the principal pronunciations for 'patriotic' and 'glacier' are with short 'a's. However, I have no doubts that you're right in saying that that the more Americanised pronunciations of 'pay-triotic' and 'glaysherrr' are steadily gaining ground, particularly amongst younger speakers.

We both use the word 'correct' but I suppose some might say that in this day and age there is no right or wrong way of saying things... well that's one argument anyway, but I will insist on standards!
