Does anyone know the relationship between Schreder, Urbis and Topaz with regard to the Opalo lantern?
My understanding is that the lantern was designed by Topaz, one of the regional companies owned the Schreder group. Then it was marketed and sold by each region, which in the UK’s case is Urbis.
The Opalo in my collection has a Schreder cast canopy, European control gear, Topaz identification labels and, finally, an electrical safety label added by Urbis. This suggests European manufacturer by Topaz and UK distribution by Urbis.
However, trying to find out more about Topaz has drawn a blank. And there’s also the related connection with the Thorn Jet which appears to use the same Topaz optical system.
All the best, Simon
