There is an unusual section of lighting on the A1 in Nottinghamshire next to the village Elkesley.
Elkesley used to be completely cut off and only be accessible from the A1, so the dual carriageway around the village was reduced to 50MPH and lit with Thorn Rivieras in the 90s. A bridge was built over the A1 in 2015 and the section was partially relit with Sapphires.
A few years ago, many of the Rivieras were replaced with second hand Iridiums and Iridium gen2s as half of them had lost their canopies and broken.
Now, in 2024, they have recently replaced about 5 Sapphires with Holophane Syracuses on brand new aluminium columns ?? And have replaced a further 4 or 5 Rivieras with Holophane V-MAXes with orange filters to appear like SON?
Why on earth would Highways Agency still be installing SON, especially Syracuses, a lantern design from over 30 years ago (that's if it's the same age as the nearly identical Onyx)…… but furthermore, be installing orange filtered LED??? The 50MPH zone is only a few miles long! They should have never installed the Sapphires in the first place in 2015 and just LED fitted the whole section!!

With regards the Holophane QSM, the design is more like 20 years old rather than 30, but I suspect a reason they were potentially used was because they had them lying around on a shelf in the stores, and for the sake of a handful of casual replacements it perhaps just made sense to use what was there rather than ordering new lighting. As for the V-Max with orange filters, that seems a bit opposite in a way, as those likely had to be ordered specially.
With National Highways having targets for LEDification of their street lighting, in all likelihood replacements on that section of A1 are a short term stop-gap measure. You could argue it's a waste of money, but this is National Highways we're talking about, and they have zero concept of getting value for money for the taxpayer. Also, more widely across the board, any SON or other discharge lighting installs by any lighting authorities now are likely with stock found in the stores, because pretty much all manufacturers have stopped making anything non-LED.

The underside of Chiswick Flyover in West London has seen Thorn Oracle lanterns running SON installed sometime in 2022. These examples here replaced Urbis Sapphire 2s, although others have replaced Alpha 8s. > August 2021> March 2022
