Hi All,

I Think it is my Revo C13721/T's birthday this month. The Capacitor has 1/64 stamped on it so I assume it is 51 years old this month.  It is amazing to think that this lantern is still working after 51 years service. :)

It is bad on my part that I have had this lantern about 6 years and tonight is the first time I have opened it up.

When you look at the state of the wiring it amazes me the lanterns work :) However it is in very good condition for it's age.

Regards,

Andrew.

Incredibly these Revo fluorescent post-tops are still surviving by the entrance of Sir James Hawkey Hall in Redbridge as of mid-2014, despite the SOX on the road next to them being in the process of replacement. I went past near here on Friday night and could still see the SOX working, so the new lanterns obviously haven't been connected up yet, but couldn't see if the Revos were still working or not.

They are a quality fitting and built to last, although I think that REVO should have gone for a easy change bowl arrangement such as that favoured by GEC. I have a couple of geared examples similar to yours and both work. In a similar vein, I've only last year fired one of them for the first time, having owned it since 2003!

Hi Claire,

Yes I agree they are very good solid fittings. The bowls on them are awful to replace, do vacuum formers still make repro bowls for them?

It would be great if they were still working and if they are still working, I wonder if they have their original gear?

I don't know Andrew, but I would suggest not. They may still have the moulding plugs, but it's normal for a quantity to be ordered before vac-forming companies are prepared to set up their machines and produce new.

Nice lantern in the OP. Watch those (ceramic?) terminal blocks if you ever do come to rewire it. I chipped the edge of one just like it in my Hyperion while re-wiring, I am guessing the heat gets to them over time and slowly knackers them, as it just happened while I was turning one of the screws.

I suppose this is early SOX, before it was re-classified at its current wattages? (I can't read the text on the ballast).

Sounds like you caught the edge of the screw driver against it.

Most likely, wasn't best pleased with myself but it was just the corner, and it doesn't affect the integrity of the fitting so I let it slide.

The whole idea of ceramic terminal blocks is that they are totally unaffected by heat!

The most likely reason for causing damage to the porcelain would be by using a screwdriver with a blade width too great for the diameter of hole in the block.

The introduction of the relatively low cost plastic strip connector resulted in the ceramic block falling out of favour - although they are still available today for situations where heat is a concern.
