Dear All.

I am currently on holiday in Adelaide,  Australia.  As we were driving up lower North east road I could not believe the street lighting, it is like a museum of old lanterns.  Everything from GEC turtles running SOX lamps to Thorn Alpha 3s, 1s to GEC bricks.  One lantern which did catch my eye was an 'open bowl' type lantern probably pre 1950s?

These are still in service, a real pleasure to see such a wide range of lanterns on one street.

Regards,

Andrew.

Dear all,

Still in Adelaid but on North East road this time I spotted some top entry GEC lanterns. The side streets are just as bizzare with a mixture of fluorescent lighting and mercury lighting. I don't know what make or model the fluorescent and mercury lanterns are. The mercury lantern looks like an Urbis ZX1 with a cupped bowl! Can anyone identify them?

Regards,

Andrew.

Dear All,

Still on Lower North East Road, well almost, we have moved do the street towards the town to Payneham Road. Here I spotted some Eleco GR100s and Philips MA90s/50s https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@-34.9130 ... 56!6m1!1e1

Here is another variant of a 90w SOX lantern. I'm not too sure if it's a GEC 9454 or a Phosco equivalent? https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@-34.8943 ... 312!8i6656

Can any one identify this?

Regards,

Andrew.

Hi Alex,

It sure is, I was stunned when I first drove down these roads. It reminds me of how the UK would have been about 40 years ago.

Regards,

Andrew.

The Mercury lantern that you said looks like a ZX1 with a cupped bowl is infact a Sylvania B2224 80W MBF lantern.

The open sodium lantern is a GEC Z9425. These were common in Southampton in the 1950s through to the 1980s.
