Are the north facing lanterns, actually dirty on the outside of the optic? Facing north they wouldn't get the undersides washed by the rain as much as those facing south.

On Hampshire motorway Lumas, several have been removed either side of J4 of the M27, with more seemed to have gone on the west side than east. The spigots are still however on the columns. Could over tightening of the spigot to lantern bolts be the cause of the failure - resulting in stress cracks from the bolt holes?

It is odd that none of the failed lanterns are being replaced, the failed lanterns probably being returned to Philips, but you would have thought a substitute lantern would be fitted, when the failed lantern is removed.
