Stanton 8D, with a 6ft outreach bracket. Once very popular all over England, the survivors are often sleeved.

Never seen that type before.  The Stanton 8Ds I've seen were more steeply curved and had triangular brackets.

Those are even more impressive. Several types of bracket were available, the curved ones seemed to be more common than the angular ones.

Is this lantern a gearless Alpha 7 on a Stanton column?

Thanks for the confirmation, sotonsteve.

I always find it interesting that lighting columns often survive even though the surrounding area may have been demolished a good while earlier. It is almost like the contractors are reluctant to topple such things with their JCB, just in case a column is somehow connected to the municipal mains.

Mind you, it would be loss to Ukastle folk if they did!

Yes, Luton is a good example of that.  Some amazing things on private land but it's unlikely you'll find so much as a concrete lamp post stump around Luton's public roads.  I always find it interesting how some replacement schemes on public highways often miss one or two old lamp posts.  Are they over power lines or just outside the house of someone important?
