I still love the long forgotten places like Bodafon Lane in Llandudno, where I found these Thorn Beta Seven gems still in service, still running 80watt MBFs!

In Llandrindod Wells is this wall mounted Phosco 109. In the background can be seen the an installation more common in the town, double Victorian lanterns on one column. Many have smoked polycarbonate/glass panes, which looks quite unattractive! There are a few LED versions with clear panes, but many are SON, and given one lantern would do, aren't exactly very eco friendly. Much more interesting was this cast iron column mounted on top of a cast iron feeder pillar in the middle of a roundabout.  A deep bowl GEC Z5580, graces the ornate bracket.

On the approach to the Menai Bridge in Bangor, a couple of GEC Z9555 135w SOX "bricks" have survived being replaced by LED. |

In Mid Wales a Phosco P222 still survives on a roundabout, quite a blast from the past.  Whilst nearby a Thorn Alpha 4, gear in body 90W SOX has escaped LED conversion. The Stewarts and Lloyds column is circa mid 1960s and it has a twin lock hinged door, but with the later style of slot lock used from around 1970 (when doors were no longer hinged) rather than the more typical square key lock. This style of column was also phased out by 1970 in favour of a more slim line type, so this column must have been in the transition period between the 2 designs.

In mid Wales a few relics lurk on, somehow missed by the LED conversion. This mid 1970s Petit Jean column with a GR100.  The bowl is a bit battered..  Nearby a well worn Thorn Alpha 4, gear in body, 90W SOX.   Literally right on the Wales/England border, another GR100/Petit Jean combo in better condition.  And another Alpha 4.  These original Petit Jean columns based on a French design are also now getting rare. Stainton produced later versions which are still fairly common - and still in production. |

More from Powys in Wales. At Penybont near Llandrindod Wells, Stainton column with Chalmit Davis GR100 Mk3.  All of these have escaped LED conversion so far.. more Stainton columns with internal gear Alpha 4s and another GR100.

Privately owned gear in body Philips MA90. Simplex Gemini There is actually another Gemini here, but at the time of the GSV imagery, the bracket was removed, presumably as the pole had been recently renewed. I have seen this in my village where pole replacement put the old lantern back, even though it was damaged, as the DNO is carrying out the work, not the lighting contractor. In this case the Gemini looks to have been refitted rather than a new LED lantern. |
