Another classic area-specific installation is replaced by bland, homogenised modern lighting. In a few years being a streetlight enthusiast will be a very dull hobby in these PFI'd areas.  :(

I was just thinking that today coming back home on a train that goes through Wakefield.... for example: If you are a massive fan of WRTL Vectra's, Urbis ZX's, and Sapphires all running SON then go and live in Wakefield... If you like unique lighting with a light source that is actually pleasant then go live somewhere else!

The next generation of enthusiasts will have a boring time indeed.

The PFI has moved to Farnham with residential columns in the east side of the town centre being replaced - and most of the Libras are day burning.

Meanwhile in Haslemere......

I had expected all of the Daleks to be gone. On the road from Hindhead, the 3 last survivors are still there, however there has been a further cull in the town itself with most of those in the west of the town now gone.

Those in the north of the town still hang on and I found another 2 examples I didn't previously know about. That leaves just 19 survivors in addition to the 3 on the A287 Hindhead road and another 3 on the A286 to Guildford, so an overall total of 25.

Farnham seems to be the focus of the Surrey PFI at present with the streets in the Heath End area to the north of the town having new columns installed in the last 10 days.

Meanwhile in Haslemere, the last few Daleks linger on, with no new work in the town in the last 6 weeks.

The Surrey PFI is currently whistling through the residential streets in the Epsom and Ewell area. Work has only been going on for less than 2 months in this area, but large swathes of streets are already completed.

It has meant that these cast iron beauties are now all history - I only got the photographs barely 2 months ago.

It is totally wrong when decorative cast iron street lighting columns that are structurally sound and pose no road safety threat, be replaced wholesale in this manner. Surely, in this day and age, when so much of our heritage as been lay to waste by the planners of the past, that what remains would be considered worthy of retaining and maintaining, even if modern retro lanterns have to be sympathetically fitted to conform with  modern lighting standards.

Well after almost 6 months, works have moved back to Farnham and the north of the town. Upper Hale Road has been relit with the "standard fare" of 5m columns with 55W Libras. The side roads off this road were similarly equipped back in the summer. I did wonder if Upper Hale Rd had been left as it was going to get 8m columns and Cosmo Arcs, but only a few have been installed at the Alma Lane junction.

What was impressive was around 60 new installations installed in the last 6 weeks, with just a few Beta 8s remaining on pole mounts. Shame the south coast PFI doesn’t work as fast. Around 15 columns were lantern swaps (which has seen the demise of around 10 Iridiums   ) rather than complete new columns.

What wasn't so impressive was around 10% of the Libras day burning - probably due to duff nodes or not being "mapped" to the central computer - rather than lack of signal - as the dayburners were in random locations and adjacent columns weren't dayburning.

Thanks for this - very interesting. It goes to show that they won't be too reliant on the public reporting faulty lamps as they can retrieve this data themselves using the remote management system.
