In Farnham, at the roundabout where the A325 from Bordon meets the A31, Lumas have replaced Arcs on the existing columns. It seems strange that new lanterns are being replaced like this. There is no evidence of any road scheme, unless you count upcoming, long overdue resurfacing.

In Bramley south of Guildford this GEC5670 is Parish owned and therefore escaped the PFI and still runs MBF. The lamp however was getting dim and green, but I can now report it has been re-lamped with a new MBF lamp.  :)

Meanwhile, back in Guildford, this Beta 5 on an early 1970s S&L column was missed by the PFI and was until recently still giving good lighting service. The lamp is now out, I guess the lamp has burnt to extinction.

Surrey is currently considering an LED upgrade to its street lighting, with the preferred option currently being to retrofit new gear trays to the Libras and replace the Arcs. So even more recent PFIs with compact fluorescent, CMS, dimming and part night lighting are not exempt from councils seeking to make further savings.

Interesting, and I could work it out accurately (its been a loong week), but I wonder if Surrey had used 36W Libras rather than 55W, if the proposed switch to LED would have been worthwhile? 36W PL-L being replaced by perhaps 20W LED isn't such a saving. The expected higher cost for power in the future is being used as the main basis/funding for further investment, rather than just the power saved at today's prices.

Also of note is that the price for early evening power, means, dimming (not enabled at that time), is not an option.

I wasn't aware the Surrey had implemented part night in residential areas recently.

I'm not sure what they think is the issue for weather proofing and optical performance for the Arc, when LED retrofits are already available. A correctly worded contract would pass the risk on to the supplier of the gear tray, not Surrey CC.

No mention is made of further savings from eliminating lamp changes, but the proposed switch over looks like it maybe done as part of that process. Mention is made of "upgrades" to the CMS to cater for LED, but surely this will be just a software change? - LED drivers can still be dimmed by the same system as used for electronic ballasts for discharge lamps.

It looks like Surrey County Council will upgrade all of their Street Lights to LED.

"In the early phases of LED replacements, old Arc lanterns can be reused to repair damaged or faulty lanterns due for replacement at a later stage. This will reduce the need to produce new lanterns for the short term whilst maintaining uniformity."

"As it has been determined that retrofitting the Arc lanterns is not viable, this will require the lantern to be replaced in full."

So they will replace the Arcs and retrofit the Libras.

Arcs have (mostly) gone in Guildford replaced by green Axia 3s. Farnham still has its Arcs. I think Libras in Guildford may have started to have LED gear trays fitted.

Heading into Guildford from the A3 down the A3100 from Burpham, the first length of road has a mixture of various LED lanterns. A trial site perhaps. But agreed, the most common LED fitment in the Guildford area appears to be Axia 3s, but I'm not sure it's exclusive.

Main road SON to LED conversions have now taken place in Farnham.

Conversion of Libras from fluorescent to LED has also taken place in Farnham and Guildford. The change is very distinctive, an 8 LED module is used and is towards the road end of the lantern. A new CMS node is mounted at the rear of the gear tray, inside the bowl. I presume the previous Harvard whip antenna has been removed and the canopy hole blanked - I couldn't see in the dark.

The conversion is quite glary compared to the fluorescent version, given the small number of LEDs and the much smaller lit area, the level of illumination on the road is good and the cut off in the mist this morning is much sharper, than before.

Not the best picture, and a bit of photoshopping to get rid of a reflection.

With the Surrey conversion almost up I wanted to give an update.

The number of Arc 80s & 90s to be replaced in Surrey has decreased, the new LED replacement is the Kirum Eco, which looks fairly similar to the axia 3 lantern.

The Kirum Ecos and Libra (DW Windsor made gear trays) are fitted with Phillps LED drivers and are equipped with Urban control nodes.   They are 3000k. The 100w Arcs are replaced with 42w Kirum Ecos & the 55w Libras for 15w gear trays.

The crew apparently convert 150 Libras per day per pair! Quite good?
