Hampshire County Council don't own or operate the motorway beneath, and there weren't any booked closures.

M27 Junction 7 roundabout is currently having its columns replaced. Interestingly, where there was a double headed existing column that fell under Highways England, the lantern on the "Hampshire" side has been removed, so the column is no longer "shared" by the two different authorities.

Once works are complete at Junction 7, I believe works will commence at Junction 11.

The south coast PFI bulk replacement fizzled to an end in West Sussex before properly finishing off the main road replacements in the town of Crawley.

Many pre PFI steel columns were left untouched if they had reasonably modern SON lanterns on such as Traffic Visions and Sapphires. Those lanterns are still there now.

Concretes have however generally been replaced, however this which probably had a GEC saucer in a past life, still survives.

There is also SOX on concrete still hanging on as well.

J7 still has its original bridge mounted columns but there are now new columns with double headed brackets and Iridiums at positions at the ends of the bridges.

J11 has had its bridge mounted columns removed and there are markings for what may be new column positions as per J7.

M27 Junction 11 replacements started last night.

It would appear the B2150 Hulbert Road roundabout at Frendstaple Road is earmarked for replacements in August, as is the remainder of Whiteley Way. These two locations are predominantly SOX with SON casuals, and replacements will all but kill off the last 135W SOX in Hampshire (excluding Portsmouth). Hulbert Road has MA50s and Z9554Ms, whilst Whiteley Way has Z9555 Bricks.

At J11, there is a new double headed column at the SW corner of the roundabout with twin Iridiums. The NW corner column is installed but has no lanterns. No twin headed columns on the eastern side yet, although there are new columns, some with lanterns, on the periphery of the roundabout. Service transfers were being carried out on some of them today.

With the purge of old main road lighting that was missed out during the core investment period in Hampshire that is happening at the moment, main road SOX is taking a hammering and shall be close to extinction outside of Portsmouth within the next week or so.

Thanks to recent replacements in Whiteley Way and Hulbert Road, there are only approximately three 135W SOX installations under Hampshire's jurisdiction. There is a solitary Philips MA50 on the A27 Botley Road in North Baddesley, which is due for replacement shortly, plus there are [I think] two Philips MA50s on the A3090 Winchester Hill in Romsey around the Braishfield Road junction, which are not currently scheduled for replacement. Other than that, Newgate Lane in Fareham is currently having replacements, which will shortly see removal of Philips MA90s, GEC Z9454s, a Phosco P157 and an Eleco HW509. In terms of main road SOX, that I believe is it for Hampshire. Highways England have a couple of SOX installations clinging on for dear life (an MA50 at A3M Junction 4 and a handful of SOX on the A3 Sheet spur north of Petersfield). Portsmouth is the place to find main road SOX now in Hampshire.

A little bit of "tidying up" in Crawley, West Sussex has seen this GEC Z5698U on a Stanton 10 column removed and not replaced - a larger column was already nearby.

Meanwhile this 30ft/10m Stewarts and Lloyd column dating from the late 1960s has had its bracket and Philips MA50 removed and replaced with a post top adapter and Philips Iridium.

Widening of the A27 Southampton Rd on the approach to the Segensworth roundabout in Fraeham is seeing these columns in the central reservation removed in favour of verge mounted columns. They were installed by the PFI less than 2.5 years ago.

Furher widening at the Titchfield Park Rd pedestrian columns is seeing this central reservation column and all of the lighting in the background removed, installed October 2013 and May 2013 respectively. New 5m fold down columns (due to the overhead 400KV line) are being added along the verge.

Lighting between those 2 locations is also being changed with columns being moved - installed October 2013...

Chichester in West Sussex shows how modern lighting can be installed without being intrusive.

On the main thoroughfares of East, West and North Street, within the medieval walled part of the city,  Lumas are installed side entry on short wall brackets, many of them new. Whilst most brackets are black, I did spot one that had been painted off white to match the building it was mounted on.

The Luma presents a low profile/silhouette, and when combined with the small brackets, makes the installations unobtrusive, almost invisible. It makes a refreshing change compared to the "norm" of oversized Albany style lanterns on columns usually far too tall and complete with embellishment kits in an attempt to make the columns look old.

Further care has been taken when the wall mounted cutout boxes have been replaced. With the demise of AC Ford, who widely supplied such boxes, cast aluminium boxes painted black, but manufactured by SUGG have been used. These are particularly narrow but tall - similar to the dimensions of a feeder pillar.

Where visible intrusion is less of an issue, the more normal GRP enclosure has been used, but in a stone rather than grey colour.

Pedestrian subway lighting uses Simmons Safeway subway light units with a single PL-40W lamp.  A  Mayflower internal node is fitted in each unit. This dims the lamps during the day and runs them at full power at night.

Whilst central Chichester retains all night lighting dimmed midnight to 0530, other areas are part night. Lavant immediately north of Chichester is one such area. The Libras are controlled by Zodion SS9s,  35/18 Lux. Switch off time started just after 0015. Given there is no central management system, the lanterns turn off individually, the relays making a very noticeable click - probably as the (residential) streets had no traffic.

Speaking of West Sussex, Penny Lane in Southbourne used to have parish owned AC Ford AC730s running mercury on simple cast iron columns. The AC730s have now met their demise and Thorn Rigas have been fitted to the existing swan necks.  This would be the doing of the parish, as the PFI only covers "county" assets.
