In Fareham, Wickham Road between Wallington Way and Osborn Road quite bizarrely has black painted 6m columns but fitted with green 36W Libras. These replaced a hodge potch of columns include 1950s 25ft S&L columns and 1980s Stainton folded metal hockey sticks. A single
Victorian (as in 19th century) column has been removed.
Slightly further on, the High Street retains the same Victorian columns and several have been refurbished over the years with new brackets. I suspect therefore that the Libras are only temporary and that 4 sided Victorian lanterns will be fitted and the columns may also get embellishment kits.
Well the black 6m columns with green Libras were indeed a temporary affair, but the permanent replacements weren't as I expected.
Both the columns and the Libras have gone replaced with modern reproduction columns which are a fairly good match (including the distinctive brackets) to the
Victorian columns in the High Street. They are certainly a better effort than these (below) installed in East Street 5 years ago - but not as part of the PFI.
