During a recent trip along the A35 through the New Forest I noticed that there was a lot of new LED lanterns, fitted I assume as part of the PFI. All were in Hampshire green. Not an expert in IDing LED lanterns, but I would say they were Lumas. Both  main road and side road variants have been installed. Streetview would suggest that these have replaced PFI spec Iridiums.

LED is specified for the national parks in Hampshire, for light pollution reasons appearently. And yes, they are from the Luma range.

The good old cul de sac lottery has come up trumps again - quite often old relics are left forgotten down cul de sacs.

In Aldershot the south coast PFI has forgotten about this cast iron beauty. Aldershot used to be full of hundreds of these columns before the PFI.

Aren't LEDs bad for light pollution though, cos of the colour spectrum? Surely cut-off SOX would be better.

The short tunnel under the railway station platforms at Winchester was lit with SON "Limpet" lanterns running 24/7. In the last week work started to replace them with LED lanterns of an unknown make. This image shows some of the remaining original lanterns (most have been removed) and the new LED lighting, yet to be connected.

Not the best image due to reduced ambient light levels and difficult pedestrian access, but a view of the larger lanterns. These are mounted in effect vertical to the tunnel wall. Elsewhere in Hampshire Lumas have been used, perhaps the constraints of the mounting position compromises the thermal management of the Luma requiring a different design of lantern.

The smaller version of the lantern used.

These LED fittings look like they could be Cree LEDway lanterns.

Whilst the South Coast PFI has largely stopped in its tracks now that the five year core investment period is over, there are a few "pickings" that happen here and there from time to time.

In Southampton there have been mercury casualties. SSE have "found" the two GEC ZD815 saucers in Petworth Gardens, Lordswood. The columns have now been replaced. Similarly, in West Road Woolston, SSE have "found" two cast iron columns with GEC Z5590s. The rest of West Road was relit earlier in the year, but clearly SSE were short of the money in the closing weeks of the core investment period, as rather than replacing the columns they fitted second-hand 3m tall hockeystick extension brackets from Glen Eyre Road to the existing casties and fitted Libras to the brackets, resulting in a three tone colour scheme (grey columns, green brackets, black lanterns). The two lost-and-found columns, now numbered 1A and 1B, have had brand new swan neck brackets fitted. Interestingly, these are fitted with DW Windsor Iffleys running PL-T lamsp.

The PFI had been replacing DW Windsor Iffleys with the similar but larger Metcraft Addingtons. Evidently their current cash flow has dictated they be more sensible. I suspect the Iffleys sourced had been taken down from somewhere else. Interestingly, whilst one was fitted with a Mayflower internal node, the other was fitted with a Harvard LeafNode. In nearby Oak Road, where the existing Iffleys survived the core investment period, these appear to have been fitted with Harvard LeafNodes too. The lanterns look remarkably shiny, so I'm not sure to what extent they have been upgraded. It is most peculiar that SSE are mixing Mayflower and Harvard systems, especially as SSE owns Mayflower, so essentially using Harvard takes money out of the company. I believe the two manufacturers' systems are compatible now, thanks to the TALQ Consortium.

In Southampton, the last public road in Southampton lit by mercury is the cul-de-sac part of Burgess Road, where three of the casties retain Z5590s. There are also two GEC ZD815s left in service in the city, but neither of these appear on the fault reporting map and ownership is questionable. There is still a very small amount of SOX left in the city, and a handful of concretes, so it will be interesting to see if anything happens to those in the coming months.

The Hedge End depot in Hampshire used by SSE as the main depot for the south coast PFI (although smaller satellite depots were in use) has recently closed, with SSE moving out entirely and the site now up for lease.

SSE moved in to the Hedge End site (the building already existed) just prior to the start of the PFI. Hedge End replaced a smaller old depot located in Portsmouth.

With the bulk replacement program now complete, there isn't a need for such a large depot. I suspect many of the vehicles for used for the PFI works have also been returned to the leasing companies.

I have a feeling they were looking to disperse the excess vehicles around the company probably in place of older vehicles. since the lease is generally about 7 years some would still have some years to run before return.

I wonder if depot movements have had an influence on the pace of replacements. Lots of staff will have already been laid off, but to save costs they may have utilised in-house resources for stock transfers in priority to continuing lighting replacements.

The "pickings" still continue at a slow pace. In West Sussex replacements along Cathedral Way past Tesco in Chichester have finally been completed. In Hampshire the A3 between the Portsmouth City boundary and Purbrook has had lantern swaps. Meanwhile, in Southampton there have been some lantern swaps south of Central Station Bridge, the replacement of one of a pair of concretes at a subway off Millbrook Road West, removal of two redundant casties at Central Bridge, and removal of the Six Dials high masts. In all three areas of the PFI region, there is still work to be done, with heritage SOX still in the centre of Chichester and mercury still in Southampton.
