The GEC brick is now quite rare anywhere now. Hampshire don't have many left although there are some late model SON ones still about - see sotonsteves fotopic. Elsewhere in the south (Surrey, Sussex, Kent, Berkshire) there aren't really any (as far as I know).

Ha Ha, a trip round Berkshire yesterday found these.

And of course not forgetting that Surrey has these on the M25 at J12 for the M3 (I was stationary in a traffic jam at the time... )

Excellent photos! Berkshire offers some great SOX still. A good close up of the M25/M3 junction bricks, displaying its age!

It is surprising how much SOX still survives in Berkshire especially on the A4 east of Reading. I was expecting it all to have been SON but its not. Lots of Alpha 8s around, both the newer Mk3 design but also quite a few Mk2 as well, but round Windsor the QSM is quite widely used. Seems like York they have a reliability problem as there are a lot of casual replacements with the far less stylish Iridium.

As for the M25/M3 bricks, sotonsteve has a far wider selection of pics on his fotopic site, but I conveniently came to a halt on an over-bridge and it was too good an opportunity to miss.  :)

The Portsmouth PFI seems to have ground almost to a halt. Indeed Binsteed Rd still retains 1970s galvanised tubular columns with MI50s but one column has just been replaced with a new hockey stick and brand new XGS103. All the surrounding roads have been PFIed so it seems stange this one hasn't.

The footpath that runs below and parallel to Holbrook Rd at its south end has new midhinged columns fitted with iridiums but that seems to be the only work going on.

Meanwhile this got changed into this, but now looks like this.

Meanwhile, this 90w Revo Sol D'Or has been removed.  Image

So this one is believed to be the very last one in the south of Hampshire possibly all of Hampshire.

Great pictures as usual. It seems they are using the MRL6 alongside the Arc at the moment. Maybe they are building up their MRL6 stocks again because that should be a cheaper lantern for the credit crunch.

How dire! What's worse is that the one on the right is actually a Streetfighter SGS 101.

Oh yes, so it is, hadn't spotted that, i'll change the caption...Seems it's well overlit as the Saph has a blacked out bowl. This installation would really be better off with a single post top lantern. GEC 5678 or better still 5670 anyone?  :D

It has been said before, but I will say it again, West Sussex has a wonderful collection of lighting from ancient to modern from MBF to CFL and everything in between.

A bit more exploring today found Bleeco open MBF lanterns on Avenue 2D concrete columns and cast iron columns.

Unfortunately since the last visit 18 months ago several of these Bleeco lanterns and their brackets have been lost to sleeving. Interestingly, it seems the time switches for part night operation were retained as the Streetfighters have blanking cells. West Sussex widely uses part night switching, I wonder if this will continue with new installations as part of the PFI? Not sure why part night NEMA cells weren't used. They have been elsewhere in the county.

Early Philips SGS201s on Stanton 5 concretes and more vintage cast iron columns.

I'm not going to need to say it soon but more great finds and some great close-ups. Sounds like West Sussex has some very interesting lighting - I haven't seen the relics so much before with other peoples' pictures.

Streetfighters, not Sapphires!

Meanwhile, I too have updated my Fotopic site. Most new photos have been placed in a new Arun District gallery, although four from outside the district have been placed in Miscellaneous Street Lighting.

Note, I have suggested that the GEC Octagonal Saucer dates from the 1980s. I assume this to be its age given that all columns on approach roads are 1980s columns, and the column supporting the Saucer is of the same type and appears to be in the same condition. GEC were certainly still getting lots of orders for GEC Fruitbowl Saucers in the mid 1980s, such as in Hampshire where they shared duties with MA50s from new.

As for Oakcroft Gardens in Littlehampton, home to the Bleeco Worthing open lanterns, it is a great shame how many columns have been sleeved. On the last visit there was one casual replacement column, the AC Ford casual replacement lantern, and possibly one sleeve. On yesterday's visit, approximately half of the original condition columns had been sleeved.
