Interesting article! Considering the Lumas were only installed 6 years ago, this is a really poor show. The Z9554s before them, however, were pretty much in the same state, although this was probably because Highways England wasn't bothering to replace failed lamps due to their impending replacement. This with new LED lanterns, however, is unacceptable!

The A127 isn't maintained by National Highways. However, I will say the Luma is a product that certainly has it's fair share of faults.

The Harvester Horse & Groom but the street light is Owned by Bracknell Forest Council and now has a new column double the height of the existing one. Another GEC Z5670 is about to be replaced in Bracknell. Nearly every street built between late 1960s and early 1990s had them. Until 2016-2018 when the LED upgrades replaced most of them.

Removed sometime in the last two weeks, but still no lantern on new column.

Lantern was installed late October and is a second hand Philips Luma Gen1.
Took over 2 months to install lantern not too good.

I’ve found what appear to be Thorn Alpha 7s in a car wash on Shirley Road in Southampton.

On the A36 Salisbury Road at West Wellow, this Petit Jean twin bracket column was chopped down more than 10 years ago. The GSV image is 2011, the column was there in 2008, but I think it went around 2010.

The column by the telephone pole on the right, was also chopped earlier in the year. The A36 is a trunk road so comes under National Highways. Better late then never, new aluminium columns have now gone in to replace both chop downs, not really needed though, the light levels are adequate without them.

Didn’t post anything here for a longtime  but here’s a bit of an update plus a few surviving old lanterns.
Royal Windsor Way in Windsor which got SON Philips Iridiums in 2010 and have survived the 2016-2018 LED conversation was recently replaced  to LED in September 2023. The old lanterns were still there on 31 August but are gone by Sept 2023 GSV imagery.
Before: https://maps.app.goo.gl/23EWZn94an76eAZg7?g_st=ic
After: https://maps.app.goo.gl/ZdNvt5KYBLdUySfs5?g_st=ic
The new lanterns are Zeta SmartScape-Aspire.
Market Street in Bracknell which had its Philips Lumas from 2017 replaced by Schreder Axia 3:2 & 3:3 and in February and May 2023 were replaced by Philips Luma Gen2 in December.

The council were replacing old columns and retrofitting the lanterns back further down the road. So it looks the columns were replaced by the developers of the new flats. So the lanterns didn’t match council specifications.

I have previously mentioned the surviving SOX lanterns on Baird Road in Aborfield but since google has updated street view so you can see them better. https://maps.app.goo.gl/jVuKaaZ2Uz4duc889?g_st=ic
Also Thorn Gamma 6 that survives. https://maps.app.goo.gl/s6wt5Wm9UbAu2NPb8?g_st=ic

At the Reading DeliveRed depot in Woodly some Eleco Grs survives
https://maps.app.goo.gl/m4eyNKLFkCYjwsTv5?g_st=ic
Also a Thorn Beta 5 https://maps.app.goo.gl/f4sGfNu2K972Uxzw6?g_st=ic
This old MV lantern still survives at East Berkshire golf course in Crowthorne
https://maps.app.goo.gl/95uWyTod2wXN3EU38?g_st=ic
Curridge Piece located north of Newbury still had few MV lanterns in 2021 sadly there was a Nordex Astra on a new pole replacing it. Don’t know whether the lantern still survives or any other on the street.

In Southall this Thorn Alpha 3 also was still there last week.

The estate round Guards Road in Windsor is privately owned so is still lit by
Various Thorn Post top lanterns.

Sadly, Harrow seems to have replaced most of its remaining SON lanterns on main roads with LED in recent weeks. I’m not sure about side roads though as I haven’t checked. What makes this even more sad is that this is one of the last London Boroughs to have a number of non-LED lanterns in service. Once Harrow goes, the only boroughs to have a number of non-LED lanterns will be Croydon, Lewisham, and Waltham Forest.

Guys, TFLs A21 replacement scheme is now right at the doorstep of Londons FINAL stretch of SOX lanterns on 10 metre columns!!!

Once this road goes, Londons 10 metre, main road SOX lighting will be banished to the history books, forever :o  :(

There is still SOX on 10 metre columns on the slip roads of the A3:

The CU columns in Holland Avenue, Cornwall Road, Avenue Road, Balmoral Way, Station Road, and The Crescent (from Station Road to the A217) have been replaced in the last week. The columns in The Crescent were replaced today. The only SOX lighting that remains are the lanterns on steel columns. I don't know what the LED lantern is that most have been replaced with is, although Philips ClearWay Gen2 have been installed on Holland Avenue.

The ZX1 lanterns on Homeland Drive have also been replaced with LED.

What a shame, made worse by the fact that this is the final London Borough to retain its SOX lanterns (albeit on side roads only and quite a large variety of lanterns too) and had the largest stock of concrete columns in London. At least the SOX lanterns on the steel columns remain, but for how much longer is anybody’s guess. What do the LED lanterns look like?
