So it appears that Mottingham Lane in Eltham has been missed by the LED replacement scheme, according to the February 2023 street view. This means that a handful of WRTL 2600s, Thorn Beta 79s and WRTL SRL 8s, as well as a couple of WRTL Arcs still remain, however I do imagine these are on borrowed time now, so enjoy it while it lasts.

UPDATE: All gone now.

Buckinghamshire has slowly lost most of its relics - the Thorn Alpha 5s in High Wycombe are long gone as are the concrete columns. No PFI, just a gradual replacement of SOX by SON and now SON by LED.

However some small/ 35W SOX still exists.

Remarkeably, 135W SOX can still be found, although it is in a poor state of repair. These are on an industrial estate, it isn't clear if the road is adopted, and although "council spec" the lighting may be maintained by Bucks, rather than owned by them. If privately owned, perhaps budget cuts to the maintenance budget have taken place...

So I’ve managed to identify those tiny LED lanterns being used on some side streets around Havering. They’re Electrical Express Knightstars. The cobrahead lookalikes are called the Zion. However, they’re slowly getting replaced with Thorn Isaro Pros. Good riddance as not only were the lanterns incredibly tiny, but their light output is dreadful.

This, plus your post about the Furyos in Hornchurch, explains a lot! I thought it seemed wasteful that Havering replaced the Furyos with R2L2s, and then vice versa! I'm guessing (and certainly hope!) the R2L2s have been placed in storage ready to use elsewhere (although I've noticed on Pettits Lane North some seemingly random R2L2s have been replaced with Isaro Pros on new brackets, which seems rather wasteful).

I also wondered why the Knightstars were being replaced so soon. I agree they were awful. Havering even used them on Lower Bedfords Road/Noak Hill Road (both main roads) and they looked most peculiar on the old S&L/Fabrikat brackets, especially on this huge bracket on the bend on Noak Hill Road.

For some strange reason, the long bracket example was left when the other lanterns were replaced with R2L2s, although it has now since been replaced with an Isaro Pro.

No problem! I’m unsure why they bothered temporarily replacing the Furyos on North Street, especially when High Street was untouched from the main road LED upgrade in 2016 and the LED retrofits occurred in circa 2020. I do hope the R2L2s will be reused as well since it would save them the trouble of needing to order new LED lanterns.

It’s strange how Havering have also been using Knightstars for main road installations. I can’t imagine the light output being any great, especially when the lanterns are mounted onto 8m columns. Could you imagine if the columns were 10m?

Bracknell Leisure Centre has replaced its lanterns in the car park. The mostly Philips Traffic Vision as well as a SGS203, SGS201, Malaga, Thorn Alpha 8 and a few other lanterns with LED Philips CoreLine Malaga. This is the first installation of Philips CoreLine Malaga I’ve seen and they look quite cheap.

The concrete columns still survive but look weird with tiny lanterns.
One final Traffic vision aswell as a unknown lanterns on concrete column survives.

On the A23 the Philips Selenium dating from 2014, near Handcross were replaced by Indo Air
Sometime late last year or early this year.
https://maps.app.goo.gl/9AWHEWeHJvfDZUf89?g_st=ic

Further south, the one near Warninglid still remained, but as of February only 3 lanterns in the central reservation remained working at night the ones sides were all nearly working apart from a few.

The A23 probably has the most diverse variety of street lights on any road that I have seen . But the were lots of failures and lots of lanterns not working.

The Siemens Boardway near Crawley had large section of them turned off. But besides that, it was the most completely lit area as nearly all lanterns worked. Futher south it’s a complete mess of columns and lanterns which replaced when they failed or hit by cars. https://maps.app.goo.gl/JrNdHJSaX7aUDhXVA?g_st=ic

The Thorn Rivera is the most popular / original lanterns with many replaced by Iridium gen1 + gen2, SGS203 ZX3, Arc, Indo Air,UniStreet and more.

More newer columns over here https://maps.app.goo.gl/GRpQRSRa4TUZQc6u5?g_st=ic

https://maps.app.goo.gl/mfxWRcJggYZ6W5z1A?g_st=ic
Further south the MRL6 is really popular and has suffered similar results as the Rivera with many replaced with a variety of lanterns and with many not working.
https://maps.app.goo.gl/rnxTvCSXci5t9MLQ7?g_st=ic

Some SOX also survived but only one was working.
https://maps.app.goo.gl/opmHf1qmmDUVJtGi7?g_st=ic

Consider the many failures I don’t think it’s long till it gets completely replaced by LED.

In Hastings the Urbis Saturns have been replaced by LED Urbis Albany. https://maps.app.goo.gl/feXBXGFdfjxNtRtJ6?g_st=ic
Only 4 Main road ones survive as of August 4th the smaller sized ones still survive as well as other Sugg? Heritage lighting. East Sussex is now probably 98% LED. Some SON does survive but it is mostly owned by National Highways.
But ESCC did retrofit a load of Seleniums, Sapphires and Evolo to LED.

In Hurst Green the street lights on the A21 including the cast iron columns have been replaced by black Philips LumiStreet on new short 8m? black columns.

I believe this has been done By the highway agency as ESCC uses Schreder and CU Phosco Lantern and LumiStreet has been used by NH but this could have been possibly done by a local parish council.

North in Kent there are more SON owned by NH. https://maps.app.goo.gl/87LPA7xJHwYG7Zk28?g_st=ic

On the A21 slip road brown coloured SGS203 have survived the Kent council replacement. https://maps.app.goo.gl/f35MHtmmQbH2XVzA8?g_st=ic

In Brighton the coach station was lit by Urbis Hestia with a few replacements Evolo but since May has been replaced by Cu Phosco E950 looking at the photographs of the neighbouring Royal Albion hotel which burned down a couple of week back and now is being demolished.

Also in Hastings this old possibly MV lantern survives on Rock-a-Nore Road

So I’m going to list some stragglers in the surrounding area of mine in Newham.

> Plashet Road still has three Urbis Furyos, which would’ve replaced WRTL MRL 6s in around 2010. I’m unsure how these managed to survive, a couple have even been relamped in the previous year!

> Penge Road has one Thorn Beta 79 which managed to escape two replacement schemes (with new LED lanterns in late 2017 and new columns in early 2020) due to being shrouded between two trees.

> Plashet Grove still has one Urbis Paseo clinging on for some unknown reason, possibly due to being located on a busy junction off Green Street. The pedestrianised area of Crescent Road also contains three Urbis Paseos that somehow also escaped replacement.

> Shrewsbury Road still has one WRTL MRL 6 located near the end of the road where Plashet Grove is. I’m unsure if it still works at night.

> Woodhouse Grove has a couple of Thorn Beta 79s, mounted onto these lovely 6m Fabrikat hockey-stick columns with long outreach brackets. I believe these are one of the final 5 remaining examples in the borough that haven’t been replaced or had their brackets chopped back, like the other examples on this road.

> Quakers Place has twelve Thorn Beta 79s, which are now under private ownership as all except one have been retrofitted with LED cobs.

> Woodgrange Road still has a number of Urbis Paseos which are miraculously still surviving despite having new columns with LED lanterns installed beside them!

> The carpark behind Lord Lister Health Centre has one CU Phosco P223 on an unpainted octagonal column. Interestingly, the same column type can be found on other streets around Newham, albeit all retrofitted with Thorn Beta 79s in the early 90s and now replaced with LED lanterns, predominantly on new columns.

> Dames Road still has WRTL MRL 6 stragglers at both ends of the road.

> Stracey Road still has one Thorn Beta 79 next to the Overground railway bridge. A DW Windsor Monaro on a new column was installed next to it sometime in 2017, but the old column was never removed. I doubt the Beta 79 still works.

> Station Street still has one Thorn Beta 79, which I’m unsure how it managed to survive as the next column over was replaced sometime between 2019 and 2020, following an extension of a community school. Interestingly, another column further down the road was installed sometime between 2012 and 2014, replacing an older column that was leaning. however that was never removed until around 3-4 years ago. What’s more is the replacement column previously held a Thorn Civic, but it was replaced in 2018 with a DW Windsor Kirium while the Beta 79 remained until its removal.

When it comes to street lighting, some councils can be so wasteful! These Urbis ZX2s on Morden Road in Mitcham were retrofitted with LED gear trays in around 2016, but they were replaced with new LED lanterns sometime between 2019 and 2020. What was the point of that?

Link: https://maps.app.goo.gl/MJ8oAm3T81TF5Q7x5?g_st=ic

At least some ZX2s remain, such as the examples on Trinity Road for example.

Interestingly, Upper Green E still retains its ZX2s which haven’t been retrofitted with LED gear trays.
