The Portsdown Hill Hi masts in Portsmouth have been converted to LED with Luma 3s.

Work on the A27 at Chichester to add a new junction east of the Portfield Roundabout has seen the existing legacy (and somewhat run down lighting), extended further east, with new aluminium columns - safety socket mounted - and Lumas. (Dash cam image).

I've just spotted the weirdest thing ever on Streetview in Benfleet, Essex! Sadly it doesn't exist anymore, as it was replaced with an SGS203 mounted on the nearby telegraph pole (which, in turn, has been replaced with a Philips Digistreet, following Essex's switchover to LED) but it's a catenary-mounted Thorn Alpha 4, lighting what is just a simple crossroads between Kents Hill Road and Clifton Avenue.

Good find, a maintenance nightmare though - probably why it got replaced.

That's quite unique. As phosco152 says, from a maintenance perspective, it would have been doomed by health and safety. That, and the span wire goes between an electricity pole and a telephone pole, and electric and phone companies don't tend to get on and look to separate their kit out if they can.

A post elsewhere linked to a series of short videos of Southampton in 1974. There are quite a few shots of the lighting back then which seemed to consist of black top entry open sodium lanterns. There is also some nice shots of the ring lanterns on Bittern Road.

Here's the link

It's with great sadness that I have to report that these magnificent fluorescents at Blackhorse Road station have had the lanterns swapped for LED lanterns on the existing concrete columns, which I find rather odd! Their future was looking rather uncertain, though, with all the building work going on in the surrounding area.

Seems like a lot of fuss over nothing much.

Well it wouldn't be the first time...

September 2006, in Portsmouth, old S&L column on left, new installation in the tree on the right. New column is 6m tall so taller than the existing column.

When I reported it, all the same excuses as in the FB post were rolled out. The council however said that they would be forcing the householder to cut back the trees - which they did, but not before the lantern was fitted and commissioned.

10 years later it looked like this.

The Iridium has now gone too, replaced by LED.
