Mile End Road in Portsmouth at the bottom of the M275 into the city is being resurfaced. As part of these works new columns have appeared next to the 1970s Petit Jean columns with their MA60s. These weren't replaced when the other MA60s were removed earlier in the year but it now looks like their days are numbered. Church Street, just off Mile End Road is also having its remaining columns with GEC 9554s replaced meaning there will soon be no SOX as you enter the city.

Meanwhile a top entry Eleco HW509 has been removed. I have been expecting this to take place for months. The column however looks now to have a secure future and its original door from 1907 has been refitted replacing a temporary steel one fitted back in August. I'm expecting an Albany  :evil:  type lantern to be fitted soon. The other identical column across the road retains it HW509 for the moment.

Correct, given the delays to the Northern Quarter project in the city centre the road maintenance works in the affected areas are no longer being delayed. Bear in mind the new development was supposed to open this year going by timescales made only five years ago. Hence, roads in the city centre are being resurfaced, and street lighting upgraded where required. The new development is now at least 10 years away from being completed, in true British bureaucratic style, but even so, a 10 year lifetime for some of the new columns going in at the moment is very wasteful.

Well it now looks like this and the other identical column has also been modified.

Meanwhile this now looks like this due to vandalism.

Two Eleco HW509s now survive in Portsmouth, this and this. One Phosco P157 also survives, but that's the last of the chunky old fashioned SOX. There may be a couple of Z9454s still around too, but otherwise it's just MA90s/50s/60s. As for side roads, only two Phosco P153s are believed to survive, as well as a handful of Z9532s, some Z5678s, and a couple of Solumbras. There are still a small number of old side road columns with Bleeco Brighton C brackets or "7" brackets, but only on a small handful of roads.

Meanwhile, replacements in the city centre continue. The trafficked part of Commercial Road is having its 10m Stainton hockeysticks and small shoe MA50s along with 1990s 12m Stainton tubulars with post top ZX3s replaced with 12m Mallatite columns with post-top large 250w Iridiums. Meanwhile, the few remaining SOX columns on Mile End Road inbound, 12m Stainton hockeysticks with MA60s, are being replaced with shorter 10m columns with 250w large Iridiums at the same spacings. The 15m columns with twin-optic ZX4s are not being touched thankfully. Meanwhile, Mile End Road outbound has not progressed any further since early this year and is still lit for a couple of hundred metres by MA60s on Stainton and PetitJean hockeysticks. Probably not for long though.

A final note though, the GEC Saucer at Port Solent still exists though.

All three chunky old 90w SOX lanterns are lucky. One survived a mid 1990s replacement scheme and still exists, one is in the cul-de-sac part of a road that was partially relit in the mid to late 1990s with the rest of the road relit earlier this year, and one exists in another cul-de-sac of another road that was relit under the PFI.

Quite often it is the cul de sacs which hold the surprises especially in residential areas. These are however "main road" so there survival is even more surprising.

More SOX has bitten the dust in Portsmouth. This has been replaced with replaced with a tubular steel column fitted with embellishment kits, "heritage" brackets and DW Windsor Strand lanterns in the last few weeks. The 25ft S&L column once the defacto main road column, is now almost extinct in Portsmouth.

Yet another relic has gone in Portsmouth. This has now been removed. That just leaves 1 traction pole with an Eleco HW509, one more HW509 on a S&L column,  possibly a couple of Phosco P153 if they haven't gone, a single P157.

Fortunately the removed column is likely to be reused elsewhere in the city, sadly the bracket will not.  :cry:
