There was once lots of these in the town, I imagine this would have been around 1950ish possibly earlier so what light source would they be running?

They'll have been running old style MA/V mercury lamps, tubular mercury lamps without a phosphor coating and so not colour corrected. The light output would have been very blue.

The SON Iridiums that were installed on the housing estate being constructed on the former Shotley Bridge hospital site have now been replaced by Urbis Abbeys running 60W CDO-TT. These are very effective and provide a nice level of light on the ground. I presume DCC kicked up a fuss about the Iridiums as the site was always designed to have heritage lighting installed.

Over the weekend up here we have had another decent covering of snow leading to more collision damage to lighting columns. On the higher road (A692) running from Consett to Team Valley, three columns in the Gateshead section have been downed by traffic accidents and another has left a post top Sapphire dangling from a wire.

Also in Gateshead in the Wreckington Area residential LED replacements have been storming ahead. I believe all older two tone S&L residential columns and CU concretes are going to be replaced before the new lanterns are installed. I believe the new LED Lanterns are Lumas although I am yet to get a close up look.

I must agree... the SGS203FG is a decent lantern with very little light spill....

Quite a few flat glass SGS203s in Co. Durham and can't fault them. They seem to have a more superior distribution of light when compared with the bowled variants, unfortunately a large number have been lost due to the radio switching scheme.

Going by GSV, in Newcastle upon Tyne there are these older GEC Turtles which are located near to the MetroRadio studios. There appears to be the Eleco version too a little further down too.

I think they've gone now. I know some work was done on that gyratory to update the lighting, just depends how far it went.

The GSVmobile went through in June 2012 going by the 'timestamp', so they may have gone.

I am pretty sure they have gone too, there used to be lots on the junctions
/ flyovers but these were replaced with a single high mast.  I know there was some flat glass Turtles just before you get onto the Tyne bridge mounted in the central reservation but I think these have gone too now, I'll check next time I'm down that way.

Heavy winds have caused a number of the recently installed Newcastle and North Tyneside PFI columns to fail. One column fell onto a grassed area, and as precautionary measure 24 others have had the chop. These are the new black PFI spec columns with Arcs installed. These columns were already heavier than the others in Tyneside but appear to have still proved too weak. The good news is that SSE are footing the bill  for the replacements; not tax payers. I take it they all had boring lanterns fitted.
It is something of a blunder to start removing columns that have probably not even been up for a year because they weren't done right in the first place!

The P222s in Roker appear to have been removed.
