It's only dimmed during low flow hours so it depends on what time you were on it. I don't know if lighting in Durham City will be dimmed yet though although it should be as everywhere else is set to be

As you will have probably heard on the news the North East has got quite a lot of snow lying. While out walking yesterday I noticed this Beta 5 with its bowl dangling. Vandalism is out of the question as it is in a more desirable area with mainly elderly residents.  Believe water had filled the bowl previously and when this froze it caused an increased weight or expansion causing the bowl clip to give way.

Gateshead has also started the final scheme of its replacements with the residential areas and are using LED lanterns. Unfortunately I was in a moving car so did not get a great chance to look.

Snow and icy weather does seem to take a toll on lighting. You might notice a few fluorescent lamps go pop as well, as the fast warm up times of CFLs can be too quick if the glass is cold and so it fractures.

This could explain why LED lighting is slowly becoming popular then, as the lamp won't shatter in the cold.

Two columns have been damaged in collisions following the snow. An octagonal Stainton hockey stick column in Lanchester has been cut and had a cone placed on the top. It previously supported an MRL6. Another example was on a roundabout just outside of Consett and here the bracket has only been removed but the column is buckled at the point of impact, the lantern here was an Alpha4. As with  previous examples it could be months before these get replaced especially if negotiations with insurance companies  are ongoing.

I have uploaded some photos into the regional album. They are of past lighting installations in Consett and lots show the steelworks complex. Some unusual ones to be seen.

Some nice ones there...

I like the GEC Z8426 overshoe turtles here:

... the Phosco P78 Jubilee lanterns here:

I don't know what these are, probably Viatrons - as those are the only lanterns I know that are quite so boxy

And this is the true definition of "flying saucer" lantern!
But look at the spindly section of column they are resting on

I know it's a pity some of this lighting stock couldn't of been retained. Where the Turtles once stood its now Green Sapphires and prior to these it was SON globes; very nasty! Middle Street now has some sort of modern, contemporary lighting which doesn't work very well. And that garage would now be in the middle of a roundabout.

Look more like GEC Lewisham lanterns, far too big for a Viatron.
