that's new. Sounds like I may be hopping on a train up to the Toon soon... as a fair bit seems to have changed.

This was posted a while back on Sabre but I thought I would share it on here.

Although the Lower Delaval Estate in Scotswood is totally derelict and disused and has been for about 8 years with very slim chance of the houses ever being brought back into use it has still been relit as part of the PFI with new Arcs and at least one Libra. What a stupid waste of time, effort and money!

That is another place I want to see for myself. I believe there is also another derelict area of newcastle... as I have seen pictures of abandoned alleys between empty houses.... and roads with wrecked lanterns along them. Unless that's been PFI'd too!

I may be wrong but I believe that estate is gone now, there has been a fair bit of demolition up above Scotswood road.

And yes that relighting scheme seems totally pointless. If you look from the Gateshead side it can be seen how much land has been levelled. Newcastle's lighting has changed dramatically with this being the last year of PFI if I am right. There are still a few pieces left in the city centre on busy traffic routes, but I believe these will be replaced as well soon.

What Newcastle did a few years ago was a right waste of money, they had ageing columns with SOX lanterns on, so they replaced most of the lanterns with black Vectras, however the columns have been deemed unfit and were replaced with the PFI. The lanterns were scrapped.

I noticed this lantern in Morpeth, Northumberland. Never seen one like it before. Runs SON presumably now. http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&sourc ... ,,1,-19.84

Hmmm... I don't know what that is! it's too triangular to be a GEC, too big for a Thorn Gamma 8, wrong shape for the other big post tops I know of.... maybe it's a Phosco of some sort.

I keep meaning to go to Sunderland, because I think there are some P222's on the seafront at Roker

Yes it's a very odd lantern. Must be quite rare now with none any where else. It's also a canny size. Never been past in the dark though to see it lit.

All the lighting on the Sea Front at Whitley Bay has been replaced with post-top Arcs as part of the Newcastle PFI, see if they can survive the severe battering from the North Sea, i belive the former lanterns were bracket mounted globe types and a few Alpha 3s as casual replacements. Most were full of brown water, on column had corroded to such a degree with snapped off at the base during the gales.

ouch! hopefully nobody was anywhere near that column when it snapped.... although I've seen how fierce the east coast storms can be, so if people had any sense they wouldn't venture anywhere near the front during a gale. Somehow, I doubt the Arcs will stand up to the battering.
