The eleco GR501 wasn't a popular choice in Carlisle. The only other place I can think of was Berkeley Grange, an estate built in the late 80s.

Although the rest of Cumbria used them a lot, especially Keswick.

Andrew.

Dalston is a little Village just outside of Carlisle. The area was once illuminated by Beta 4 lanterns with mercury lamps.

There are some "left over" lanterns that have been forgotten about. There are 3, Beta four lanterns in the village center, two of them have their bowls intact, the other has it's bowl missing but it's refractor ring is still intact.

One of the bowls is an opal version. The lanterns do not work and were superseded by Eleco GR100s/Philips Ma9s.

There are 2 'forgotten' lanterns in Sleights near Whitby.

There is a AC850 and a AC730 both abandoned when the street went under relighting. I am fairly certain that there was a third abandoned Z5590 when I visited in 2004, but this could possibly have been removed or was never there.

I was looking at the old Derby Royal Infirmary on streetview and noticed this forgotten lantern with CCTV under it. looking at the later date on the time slider you will see the lanterns change from SOX down the road to SON, but this one has been left. I'm not actually sure if it works or not as I'm not from Derby, but thought it would be a good edition.

Would be disconnected but not removed due to its location...

You have it the wrong way round. Its a CCTV mast that also has the ability to have a streetlight bracket. The Derby PFI replaced the columns along the road - hence the new taller columns with Iridiums, but the PFI won't touch non streetlighting installations such as the CCTV mast. Hence why it remains unchanged - although as Nick mentions the lamp will have been disconnected.

Does this also go for mobile phone masts? In Hertfordshire, the A1057 Hatfield Road has had its lanterns replaced with Urbis Amperas under Ringway's A-road LED upgrade scheme and even this mobile phone mast had the bracket chopped and an Ampera installed. Yet, another mobile phone mast further along towards St. Alban's has been completely untouched. Was the first example retrofitted by accident, or do you think the second example should have been retrofitted but the usual bit of sloppy workmanship has meant it has been missed?

It all depends on a case by case basis. In the case of the Derby example you would not expect the PFI to replace the Alpha 4 with SON on that CCTV mast as the PFI would have specified something along the lines of "replace old columns with new" - you certainly wouldn't expect the PFI to fit a new CCTV mast! They therefore fitted a new column nearby (and probably disconnected the lantern on the CCTV mast).

In Herts, its "replace A road lanterns with LED" and in this case it would be reasonable to expect to include those lanterns on "other multi-use columns". So your 2nd example may have been missed - assuming it falls within the "A road scope".

Ringway have subcontracted it to another company. The work has been fast but a little sloppy with missed lanterns etc.

I found a real cracker in the heart of Skelmersdale on what I think is the old car park site of the west Lancs college (the building was rebuilt and the old one is long gone). There's 2 MA50s on a double arm bracket, another double arm with a WRTL MRL6 (or GEC) with 2 floodlights on the other end, and the third was another MRL6  with what I thought was an Alpha 3.

I don't believe any of these work, definitely not the MAs. the others may be used to light the footpath that runs through but I don't like going to Skem, especially at night so I really wouldn't know.

Also apologies for the rubbish pictures, my old Galaxy Ace isn't what you would call professional.
