The film Dark Encounter is supposedly set in Pennsylvania in the US. However in the opening minutes there are CU Highway X columns with Philips MA50s, and a suspiciously British looking galvanised steel column.

Image

Despite the US signage and car, the road markings also look very "UK".

Honestly, film makers really ought to try harder.  ;)

Ah, American set locations that have supposedly used UK street lighting! There have been many films circulating around this topic but I can assure that they won't copy us all the time.

Well, American street lighting has been basically the same in history, except of course they are now switching over to LED just like we are doing and who knows, maybe someone in the US might be trying to save old American street lighting, just like we are trying to save our old street lights.

No LED is better than other light sources (apart from probably lanterns such as Philips LumiStreets)!

From the BBC drama "The Serpent", archive footage from mid 1970s Paris. Incredibly stylish columns with fluorescent lanterns.

They look very similar to the Revo Sol-Etern.

From series 1 episode 5 of Fawlty Towers, its 1975 and supposedly Torquay.

Image

Fawlty's car lower left and a superb view of Stanton columns with GEC fluorescents.

A quick search on the interweb, shows the actual location to be Preston Rd in  Harrow, Middlesex.

GSV shows the view in Dec 2020.

The entrance to the car park marked with the P plate on the 1975 image is behind the Arman white van in 2020. Another point of reference in the GSV image, is the chimney of the flats in the far right distance by the lamp post, which corresponds with the lamp post on the right in the 1975 image.

Series 1, episode 6 of Fawlty Towers, and Northwick Park Hospital, Harrow Middlesex (and not Torquay or even Devon), stylish columns with unidentified - and probably fluorescent lanterns.

Image

Unfortunately, GSV doesn't show this part of the hospital for a present day comparison.

The film Operation Crossbow released in 1965, tells the tale of the Allies plans to disrupt the production of Hitler’s V1 flying bomb and the V2 rocket. Towards the end of the film, and corresponding with 1944 in real life, is this shot of a brand new Concrete Utilities Avenue  column with a 140W SO lantern. 20 years too late for the film, and of course street lighting in the UK was out of use during WW2.

From "The architecture that the railways built", vintage film from the late 1950s/early 1960s of Brentford Docks in west London, impressive curved double bracket concrete columns.

From the highly acclaimed French drama/crime series Spiral (available on iPlayer), series 7 filmed in 2018, at a prison somewhere in France, Philips remote geared MA50s. (Screen captures so not the best quality).

And to top that, wall mounted Philips MI36s.
